About our gutter survey in Jersey Farm

Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. If they clog, drip or sag, the water ends up somewhere it shouldn’t and that normally means the walls or the inside of the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. You get a photo-illustrated written report. If you’ve noticed leaking or loose downpipes and leaves and moss blocking gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In a smaller place like Jersey Farm, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Older roofs can have slate, clay tiles or other traditional coverings, while many later ones have concrete tiles. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes frequently need the most attention. The fixings under an older roof often fail before good slates or tiles do.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

What we can’t see

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • Blockages deep inside downpipes
  • Hidden sections we can’t view safely
  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Fascias and soffits
  • Downpipes
  • Eaves gutters
  • Valley gutters
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers

Tips that help

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:

  • Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
  • Note any damp stains below the gutters
  • Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
  • Ask for valleys and parapet gutters to be cleared too

After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Rain should flow to the outlets and down the downpipes. If it does not, tell whoever did the work.

Have your gutters cleared at least once a year, and more frequently if trees overhang the roof. The best time is typically after the leaves have dropped. Clean gutters can do their job.

Different roofs, different checks

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Plastic can become brittle with age and split. We look at the joints, brackets and falls.

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters

A London butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter, and a blockage there can overflow inside. It’s inspected as far as safe access allows.

Why act early in Jersey Farm

Overflowing water soaks the walls under the gutter. Left for months, that can lead to damp inside, worn pointing and rotten timber. Finding the cause now usually keeps the fix smaller. Around Jersey Farm, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.

To find out what your survey will cost, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and tell us about the roof. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.

Jersey Farm: your questions answered

How do I find out if my home in Jersey Farm is listed?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

I let a flat near St Albans station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us about the building.

Will you check the drains below ground?

No. We look at above-ground rainwater only down to where the downpipes reach the ground. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.

Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?

The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside the wall itself, so the report covers what can be seen.

Is Jersey Farm in your area?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and that includes Jersey Farm.

When does the report arrive?

Report times are set by the package. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, like an exchange date, tell us when you book.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where applicable and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where it applies.

Jersey Farm homes and their roofs

With Childwickbury Manor about 2.3 miles west, Jersey Farm sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.

Anyone responsible for a site like Skyswood Primary & Nursery School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. Living close to Clarence Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn. If you own a rental within reach of St Albans station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

How it works

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. The survey usually takes an hour or two on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. In a smaller place like Jersey Farm, parking is seldom the issue; lanes, gates and long drives are worth mentioning. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. First, you let us know what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
  4. The roof space is checked for water marks if it is safe to get into.
  5. We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
