How a gutter survey works in Mortimer
Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork frequently trace back to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, from whatever is safely visible. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so, with a suggested next step. If you are worried about joints that drip after rain and sagging gutters and loose brackets, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Around Mortimer, older cottages sit alongside bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes often need the most attention. Nails and battens under older coverings often give out before the slates or tiles themselves.
The report records the gutter as we found it on the day. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

Why get it checked now?
When a valley or parapet gutter blocks, the water has nowhere safe to go. It can overflow into the building, frequently in the heaviest rain. Having them checked before autumn and winter makes sense. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Mortimer, so it’s useful to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. A survey gives you that notice.
Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Different roofs, different checks
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
Lead gutters need their linings, steps and outlets in good order where it’s safe to see them. Missing lead is something we check for too.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Aluminium and other metal gutters are used on many newer and commercial buildings. Joints, outlets and fixings are the parts we focus on.
Can I check my roof myself?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Common questions in Mortimer
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Mortimer?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Will you come out to Mortimer?
Yes. Mortimer is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
Do you survey at weekends?
Yes, weekend visits are possible as well as weekdays. To book, call 07833 053749 or send us an email.
How do I arrange a gutter survey in Mortimer?
It is easiest to call 07833 053749 or send us an email. Tell us the address and a little about the roof, and we’ll suggest the right survey. Surveys run on any day of the week.
How much time does the visit need?
For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where applicable and safe. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. Drone inspection is part of the Drone Roof Survey and the Premium Survey, where applicable.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

What we’re asked to look at in Mortimer
Hidden gutters are often lined with lead or another sheet covering. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside, because there is no outer edge for it to spill over. Lead is also a target for theft.
Things that frequently lead to a survey include:
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Rotten fascias or stained soffits
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
The streets around a church like Mortimer Methodist Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- What experience they bring
- How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
- Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
- Which limits apply to the survey
What happens on the day
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. Most surveys take about 1–2 hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. With a bit of garden around a house, as there frequently is around Mortimer, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Mention any side of the property we can’t get to. The loft, where there is safe access, completes the picture.
- We start by hearing about any drips, overflows or damp patches.
- We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground and from windows.
- Any valley, parapet or box gutters are looked at as far as safe access allows.
- We look in the loft space, where there’s safe access, for signs of water getting in.
- The findings are written up with photographs and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Tell us where we can park nearby
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a price

What a gutter survey looks like in Mortimer
Historic houses such as Stratfield Saye House, about 3.6 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Mortimer goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
For site and facilities teams at buildings like Mortimer St John's C.E. Infant School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you own a rental within reach of Mortimer station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.
