Gutter surveys around Newick
Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.
Take an older house close to Zion Chapel: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. Take a building like Newick Church of England Primary School: its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

How a gutter survey works in Newick
Your gutters take the rain from the roof and lead it away from the walls. If they clog, drip or sag, the water ends up somewhere it shouldn’t, often down the brickwork or into the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. You get a photo-illustrated written report. Common reasons to book are gutters that have fallen out of line and rotten fascias or stained soffits, across parapet and box gutters, eaves gutters and downpipes.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A roof report shows what needs attention first. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Practical tips
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
- Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
The report comes with photos and clear written recommendations. Share it with a contractor of your choice so they can see exactly what’s needed.
Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before damage builds up.
Signs you need a gutter survey in Newick
Hidden gutters are often lined with lead or another sheet covering. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside, because there’s no outer edge for it to spill over. Lead linings can also be stolen.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Cracked or loose downpipes
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Soffits marked by water
Homes near green spaces such as Sheffield Park Garden can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.
Landlords and letting agents in Newick book surveys as well as homeowners. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the gutter, which helps you plan work between tenancies.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Newick
How do I find out if my home in Newick is listed?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you come out to Newick?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Will the survey check for asbestos?
No, that is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. On buildings from before 2000, we flag materials that could contain it so you can arrange that check.
How soon will I get the report?
It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes, as far as they can safely be seen. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe, and by drone where it is applicable.
How experienced are you?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
What a gutter survey does not cover
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- Gutters out of sight from every safe vantage point
If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

- Parapet and box gutters
- Valley gutters
- Outlets and hoppers
- Eaves gutters
- Downpipes
How the survey works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the gutter as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Notes and photos go into the written report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. In a small place like Newick, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
- The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Jot down any questions you want answered
- Keep pets in another room

Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
Many older homes have lead-lined valley and parapet gutters. A split lining can leak straight into the building.
Box and secret gutters
A secret gutter is tucked under the slates or tiles at an abutment or valley and is easy to overlook. We look at what’s visible and note what is not.
