What we look for on each type of roof

Plastic (uPVC) gutters

Plastic rainwater systems are common on homes of many ages. Their joints can leak as the seals wear, and brackets can sag under load.

Box and secret gutters

A secret gutter is tucked under the slates or tiles at an abutment or valley, so they’re easy to forget. The report records what could and couldn’t be seen.

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in North Camp

People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use the report to plan upkeep, and some buyers want the rainwater system checked before exchange. The survey and report follow the same steps whatever the reason, with photographs and written recommendations. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. We’re frequently asked to look into cracked or loose downpipes and blocked outlets and hoppers, on outlets and hoppers, eaves gutters and downpipes.

In a smaller place like North Camp, homes range from older cottages to bungalows and newer houses. Coverings range from slate and clay tiles on older homes to concrete tiles on many later ones. Chimneys, valleys and gutters on older homes frequently need the most attention. The fixings under an older roof often fail before good slates or tiles do.

With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How it works

It is useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. A visit to a smaller place like North Camp is no different on the day: we look from the ground, from windows, from the loft and from the roof where it’s safe. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you’re most worried about.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Preparing for the visit

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Tips from our surveys

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Watch for green marks down the brickwork
  • Have overhanging branches cut back
  • Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
  • Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters

After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over. If it does not, tell whoever did the work.

Have your gutters cleared at least once a year, and more frequently if trees overhang the roof. The best time is typically after the leaves have dropped. Clean gutters can do their job.

Questions from North Camp

Is North Camp within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Can a landlord with a rental near North Camp station book a roof survey?

Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. Just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the building.

Are you insured?

We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

What will the report tell me?

A report with photos, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations, with the most urgent first where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

What happens after the survey?

The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.

Do you take photos of the roof?

Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes. These gutters often cause leaks indoors when they block so we pay close attention to them. Parts of them may not be visible, and we’ll note that in the report.

When you need someone else

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls
  • Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
  • The inside of buried drains

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

Checking the roof from ground level

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in.

Gutter surveys in North Camp: local notes

Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it’s frequently the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. The wider area around North Camp has a long history of building, with Farnham Castle about 4.8 miles south-west. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.

For businesses in and around places such as Hart Shopping Centre, a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions. Homes near green spaces such as Ramillies Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Do you need a gutter survey in North Camp?

Moss grows on many tiled and slate roofs, and heavy rain washes clumps of it into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that slows the flow and lets weeds take root.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Choked outlets or hopper heads
  • Gutters overflowing in heavy rain
  • Soffits marked by water
  • Gutters full of debris and silt

Landlords with a home close to North Camp station may find that a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.
