Russ Hill Gutter Survey
Gutter surveys in Russ Hill, backed by more than 20 years’ experience. Every survey ends with a written report and photographs.
- Valley or box gutters that overflow inside
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Cracked or loose downpipes
How a gutter survey works in Russ Hill
Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. If they clog, drip or sag, the water ends up somewhere it shouldn’t and that normally means the walls or the inside of the building. Our survey looks at the whole rainwater system above ground, including gutters, valleys, outlets, hoppers and downpipes. You get a written report with photos. Typical surveys look at soffits marked by water and choked outlets or hopper heads, on valley gutters, fascias and soffits and outlets and hoppers.
Some older homes in villages like Russ Hill are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly.

What a gutter survey doesn’t cover
This is not a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- The inside of buried drains
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.

Local roofs in Russ Hill
Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
The streets around a church such as Church of St Nicholas are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine. Homes near green spaces such as Edolph's Copse can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

What you can safely check yourself
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.
Signs you need a gutter survey in Russ Hill
Overflowing gutters in a downpour are a common reason to book. Others spot damp patches, ceiling stains or green marks on the walls. The survey helps pin down the source before it causes more harm.
Common reasons to book include:
- Sagging gutters and loose brackets
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
Landlords with a home close to Ifield station may find that the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Questions from Russ Hill
Do you cover smaller places like Russ Hill?
Yes, Russ Hill is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Can a landlord with a rental near Ifield station book a roof survey?
Yes, landlords and agents book with us as well as owners. Just call 07833 053749 or send us an email and let us know about the building.
How much time does the visit need?
Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, and longer for larger or complex roofs.
Does someone need to be in?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. Our gutter survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. If a drain below ground looks like the cause, the report says so.
Could my damp wall be caused by the gutters?
We check whether rainwater from the gutters is reaching the wall, through overflows, drips or damaged downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so the report covers what can be seen.
Practical tips
A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Keep climbers away from the eaves
- Note any damp stains below the gutters
- Don’t leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
If anything in the report isn’t clear, ask us. With the Standard Survey there is a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation.
Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof by someone who can do it safely. Less debris means fewer blocked outlets.
What we do, step by step
The visit has one job: to see as much of the gutter as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. It normally takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. For a village or hamlet like Russ Hill, the journey is planned beforehand: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- First, you let us know what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
- Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can be seen safely.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- We send a written report with photos and clear recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Let us know where we can park nearby
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of

Fascias and soffits
Some older soffits may contain asbestos. Any we think could be are flagged for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
Cast iron gutters
Lots of period homes still have cast iron rainwater goods. Kept painted, they can last a long time but corrode once the paint wears off.
