Checking the roof from the ground
Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking and it will help the survey.
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Gutter survey in Shover's Green
Some gutters are easy to see from the street but plenty of gutters are tucked away. Valley gutters between slopes, gutters behind parapet walls and box or secret gutters can overflow inside the building when they block. We inspect them as far as it’s safe to see them using vantage points, the roof space and the roof itself where safe. Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. If you’ve noticed water spilling over the gutter edge and rotten fascias or stained soffits, a survey will tell you what’s going on.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to.

Your questions about gutter surveys in Shover's Green
Can a landlord with a rental near Stonegate station book a roof survey?
Yes, that is a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
Do you cover smaller places like Shover's Green?
Yes, Shover's Green is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Can the survey be at a weekend?
Yes, we carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays as well as weekdays. To book, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found, so you can see exactly what each finding refers to.
Do you survey underground drains?
No. We look at above-ground rainwater only, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. Where a below-ground drain seems to be the problem, we will tell you.
Are you insured?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
How experienced are you?
Over 20 years and more than 5,000 surveys.
Why act early in Shover's Green
Clearing gutters removes the debris, but it doesn’t tell you why a gutter overflows. Our survey also looks at falls, joints, brackets, outlets and downpipes to show whether something else is wrong. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Shover's Green, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
A Basic Survey starts from £150, with VAT included. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both with VAT included. You will know the price for your survey before booking.

What we do, step by step
We look at the roof from outside and, where it is relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey typically takes between one and two hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older rural homes like those around Shover's Green can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First, you let us know what you’ve seen, such as overflows or damp.
- We look along the gutters, downpipes and fascias from ground level and from windows.
- Valley, parapet and box gutters are inspected as far as they can safely be seen.
- Where the loft can be reached safely, we check it for staining or damp.
- You get a report with photographs and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Find any records of previous roof work
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Gutter surveys in Shover's Green: local notes
Many older homes in Sussex have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them. Historic houses like Wadhurst Castle, about 1.6 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Shover's Green goes. If you own one of the older houses, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Take an older house close to Shover's Green Baptist Chapel: its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look. If you let a flat or house near Stonegate station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

How the survey changes by roof type
Fascias and soffits
Fascias carry the gutters, so rot in the boards can loosen the whole run. Damaged or stained boards are recorded.
Aluminium and other metal gutters
Long metal gutter runs on larger buildings can hide blocked outlets, so we check the outlets carefully.
Common roof problems in Shover's Green
Sometimes a gutter struggles with the area of roof draining into it. Added roof area from an extension can load an older gutter, and a heavy downpour shows up the problem.
It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Soffits marked by water
- Leaking or loose downpipes
- Dripping or leaking gutter joints
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
If you live near a park like Wadhurst Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
