Gutter Survey in Snow Hill

We take a careful look at the gutter at your property in Snow Hill, and put it all in a written report with photos.

  • Gutters packed with leaves or moss
  • Fascia boards damaged by overflowing water
  • Joints that drip after rain

Gutter surveys near Snow Hill

Gutter survey in Snow Hill

Damp on walls, water marks under a valley or streaks down the brickwork frequently trace back to the gutters. Our gutter survey helps show whether the rainwater system is the cause, as far as can safely be seen. Where the cause looks more like the roof covering or a flashing, the report says so. The next step is suggested too. If you are worried about dripping or leaking gutter joints and gutters that have fallen out of line, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.

In a small place like Snow Hill, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are frequently the first to give way.

The report is written in plain words, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

Can I check my roof myself?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That’s where a survey comes in.

What happens on the day

There is not much for you to do on the day. Show us any stains, drips or problem areas you know about, and we will take it from there. The survey itself takes about one to two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Rural addresses near Snow Hill can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Before the survey

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller

Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:

  • Keep climbers away from the eaves
  • Get the gutters cleaned out every year
  • Watch ceilings under valley gutters for fresh marks
  • Look out for overflows when it pours

For let and shared buildings, the report can go on file and use it to plan upkeep. Photos make it easier to explain the work to owners, tenants or contractors.

Get the gutters cleared every year or more often near trees. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clear gutters can carry water away as they should.

Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Snow Hill

Saint Hill Manor, about 3.4 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Snow Hill. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.

Snow Hill is about 3 miles west of East Grinstead, in West Sussex. Snow Hill gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a close look at what can safely be seen, photos and a clear written report. Our area takes in places right across West Sussex, large and small.

When you need someone else

It’s a careful look at the gutter, not the whole story. Its limits include:

  • Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls
  • Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.

Common roof problems in Snow Hill

Valley, parapet and box gutters are often lined with lead or a sheet material. Splits and blocked outlets in these gutters can send water straight into the building as there is nowhere harmless for it to go. Lead is also a target for theft.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Leaves and moss blocking gutters
  • Cracked or loose downpipes
  • Overflowing eaves gutters
  • Water backing up from a hidden gutter

If you let a flat or house near East Grinstead station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone
  • What insurance they carry
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
  • Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA

Snow Hill: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Snow Hill?

Yes. Snow Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

I let a flat near East Grinstead station. Can you check the roof?

Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.

How long does a gutter survey take?

A visit usually takes an hour or two for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. You’ll know roughly how long when we arrange the visit.

Are hidden gutters like valleys and box gutters included?

Yes, where it is safe to see them. We look from vantage points, the loft space and the roof itself where safe and a drone where it applies.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we’re not structural engineers and do not carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.

What does the report include?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photographs throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too, so you know exactly what was covered.

Will I get photos?

Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and the report uses them to show each finding.
