DIY checks: what’s safe

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

New roof snagging for homes and businesses in Weston

We check the coverings, ridges, verges, hips and valleys plus flashings and roof ventilation. At the eaves we check how the underlay is dressed into the gutter, where it can be seen as well as the gutters. You get a photo report of what we found. Any debris left behind or damage to other parts is recorded too. Typical surveys look at debris left in gutters or valleys and poorly finished verges, across flashings and valleys, ridges and verges and new flat roofs.

Being in a small place like Weston makes no difference to the inspection itself: the journey, parking and access are simply agreed in advance. If there are outbuildings with roofs you want checked, mention them as you book, so the visit can be planned around them. Whether you are buying or checking new work, the same care goes into it. Visits can be booked on weekdays and at weekends.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, sent by email. It explains the condition of the new roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Weston: your questions answered

Is Weston in the area you cover?

Yes, Weston is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Will you come out to Weston?

Yes, Weston is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys.

How much time does a snagging visit need?

It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much new work there is to check. We will give you an idea when you book.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Do you look in the roof space?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Local roofs and buyers in Weston

Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whether you’re buying or checking new roofing work, knowing the materials helps make sense of what the inspection finds. About 4.7 miles south-east lies Benham Park, a reminder of how long the area around Weston has been built on. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

If you let a flat or house near Kintbury station, it is worth knowing a roof’s condition before you buy it, or before you sign off new roofing work on it. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near St Thomas' Church, ask the seller about past roof repairs, because older roofs often have patched valleys, replaced slates and reset ridges.

Why get it checked now?

Some faults only show when water gets in. Checking early gives you a record of the roof’s condition at handover. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Weston, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

What happens on the day

A survey visit follows a simple order: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere like Weston needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. First, we note any deadlines and concerns.
  2. The roof is inspected from ground level, vantage points and the roof where safe.
  3. Each detail at ridges, verges, valleys and flashings is looked at.
  4. Debris and damage to other parts are recorded.
  5. We send a written report you can pass on.

Preparing for the visit

  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared

Advice

For landlords and managing agents

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed ahead of time. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which can make access easier.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you contact us and we’ll plan the survey around it.
