Roof leak investigation in Castle Hill: what you get
Not every drip is a leak. Condensation in a cold, poorly ventilated loft can drip from nails and timbers, leaving marks that look just like rainwater. Knowing which it is means the right fix can be done, since the cure for one won’t solve the other. The pattern of the damp, the ventilation and the timing all help us decide. If you’ve noticed water coming in around a roof light or dormer and drips from nail tips in a cold loft, we can find out what’s behind it.
For a small place like Castle Hill, the inspection is the same as anywhere: the journey and access are just planned ahead of time. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

The survey, step by step
A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at most homes; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Older rural homes like those around Castle Hill can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We help you choose the package that suits the leak.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- The investigation works from the stain back to the roof.
- Where it’s useful and included, we take moisture readings and use thermal imaging.
- The report explains the likely entry point and what needs attention.
Preparing for the visit

Advice
Should I look at the roof myself first?
It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Roof leak investigations in Castle Hill: local notes
Across Kent, older roofs are frequently handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts. Scotney Castle, about 4.3 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Castle Hill. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.
Landlords with a home close to Paddock Wood station may find that a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Brenchley and Matfield Church of England Primary School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Booking your survey

- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- When you need the report by
- The property’s address and postcode

Before and after the survey
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:
- Record whether it leaks in every downpour or only some
- Catch drips in a bucket and protect the floor
- Leave roof access to professionals
- Keep water away from lights and sockets
Your report arrives by email. It explains the likely entry point, the route the water takes and our recommendations. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day.
After a downpour, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. Look for drips, damp patches and stains on timbers. Photograph anything new.
Castle Hill questions
Will you come out to Castle Hill?
Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Castle Hill?
Yes, Castle Hill is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We look at everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach.
Will you fix the leak as part of this?
The investigation is about finding the cause. The repair itself is a separate job. You get a report with photos showing where the water is getting in and what needs attention.
Do you use thermal imaging to find leaks?
Thermal imaging is used where it is useful, and it is part of the Premium Survey. It shows temperature differences, not water itself, so we confirm its findings with moisture readings.
Can every leak be traced?
We cannot promise to find every leak on one visit. Many leave clear signs, but intermittent leaks that need particular weather can be harder. We report what we found and the likeliest sources.
What we look for on each type of roof
Parapet and box gutters
Hidden gutters run behind parapets or between roofs. When their outlets block, water rises over the lining and runs indoors.
Flat roof upstands and outlets
Upstands seal the edge of a flat roof where it meets a wall. A low or cracked upstand is a common way in.
Do you need a roof leak investigation in Castle Hill?
Condensation is often mistaken for a leak. Moist air from bathrooms and kitchens condenses on the cold underside of the roof, particularly in lofts with blocked eaves. Wet nail tips and damp underlay over a wide area are classic signs.
Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:
- Water marks that spread in wet weather
- Stains around a skylight
- Drips in the loft during heavy rain
- Leaks that appear only in driving rain
The streets around a church such as Parish Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.
