Roof survey in Ampfield, Hampshire
We carry out roof surveys in Ampfield and the rest of Hampshire. We survey on any day of the week.
- Torn or sagging underlay
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
What a roof survey does not cover
We only report what can safely be seen on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:
- A full building survey of the property
- Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Ampfield
Three packages cover most roofs: a Basic Survey from £150, a Standard Survey from £250 and a Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT. Basic is a visual inspection with photos and written recommendations. Standard and Premium go further, such as moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging and a drone where it applies. Every package includes a written report. We survey lead flashings, natural slate and flat roofs, and the problems we are asked to look at most are blocked, sagging or leaking gutters and ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs.
In a small place like Ampfield, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us as you book.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Your questions about roof surveys in Ampfield
Will you come out to Ampfield?
Yes, we do. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Is my home in Ampfield listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you go up on the roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the loft space. On Premium, a drone is used where applicable.
How many surveys have you done?
We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, and 98% of clients are satisfied.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.
What insurance do you have?
We’re covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
What we do, step by step
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take about one to two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Cottages and farmhouses around Ampfield often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
- We agree a date, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- We inspect from ground level, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where safe.
- Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Why act early in Ampfield
Roof faults rarely stay the same size. A single gap lets water onto the timbers underneath, and damp timber slowly weakens. Catching it early means less to put right. Around Ampfield, older homes frequently have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how safely it can be seen. Our price is from £150, including VAT.
What you get with us
- Independent findings on the roof’s condition
- A written report with photographs

Ampfield homes and their roofs
If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it is listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Mark, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. For landlords with property near Chandlers Ford station, knowing the condition of the roof, chimneys and gutters helps you plan work rather than react to complaints. Take a building like Ampfield Church of England Primary School: long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle.

Different roofs, different checks
Concrete interlocking tiles
Many post-war houses have concrete interlocking tiles. They’re heavy and hard-wearing, but their surfaces weather over the years.
Natural slate
From the loft, we look at the underside of a slate roof. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none.
