Roof surveys in Knapp: local notes

Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, ideally before any re-roofing is planned. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.

If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Church of St Mark, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs. Anyone responsible for a site like Ampfield Church of England Primary School will know that long gutter runs and wide roofs on a building that size are worth checking on a regular cycle. Landlords with a home close to Chandlers Ford station may find that the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Knapp is about 2 miles north-west of Chandler's Ford, in Hampshire. We cover Knapp and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. Our Hampshire coverage includes Knapp. Southampton is in our area too.

Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Knapp

Our roof survey gives you a clear picture of your roof’s condition. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, and the loft space where there’s safe access. You get a written report with photos and recommendations. Where it’s relevant, the recommendations are prioritised by urgency. Typical surveys look at loose ridge or hip tiles and gutters that overflow in heavy rain, on natural slate, the roof space and flat roofs.

Older buildings in small places like Knapp may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Before and after the survey

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Mention any damp patches when booking
  • Gather any paperwork for past roof work
  • Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch

The Premium Survey includes a 12-month follow-up. It shows how the roof has fared over the year, and whether work has done its job.

Look at your roof from the ground after strong winds. Fragments of slate or tile on the ground mean something has shifted. Prompt repairs stop small problems growing.

What happens on the day

We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. The whole visit usually takes about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. Somewhere like Knapp needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. You let us know about the property and any concerns.
  2. We arrange a day that suits you, including weekends.
  3. We inspect from ground level, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where safe.
  4. We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
  5. We email a photo-illustrated written report and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Leave a clear route to the loft
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey

What this survey cannot tell you

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • Confirmation of asbestos in soffits or cement sheets
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • A full building survey of the property

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Clay and concrete tiles
  • Chimney stacks
  • Natural slate
  • The roof space
  • Lead flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges, hips and valleys

Can I check my roof myself?

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Knapp: your questions answered

Will you come out to Knapp?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

How do I find out if my home in Knapp is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.

Will you check the loft?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days when you book.

How long does a roof survey take?

The visit usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. We will give you an idea of timing when you book.

Do you give a life expectancy for the roof?

Not as a figure. We describe the condition of each part of the roof and how it is wearing, with recommendations ranked by urgency.

Roof by roof

Clay plain and peg tiles

Clay tiles are common on older South East homes. When pegs or battens rot, tiles slip.

Concrete interlocking tiles

Ridge and verge mortar on concrete tile roofs can crack and fall away. Loose ridges and gaps in the mortar are recorded, as wind can lift them.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in, at a time agreed in advance. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which can make access easier.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.
