What we look for on each type of roof
Loft insulation
Insulation frequently gets moved during work in the loft. Thermal images can show where it has been pushed aside.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
On pitched roofs, slates and tiles over a ventilated space can mask what’s happening underneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.
About our thermal roof survey in Knapp
Our Premium Survey, from £400, brings together a full roof inspection and thermal imaging. It also includes a drone inspection where it applies, a structural analysis and a same-day report. There is an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. To book, just call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. Typical surveys look at missing or slipped insulation and water getting in at parapets and stacks, on flat roofs, commercial roofs and loft conversions.
Villages like Knapp frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photo. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

What a survey costs
Survey packages start from £150, inc. VAT. The price for your roof depends on:
- How many separate roofs there are, like extensions, dormers and garages
- Height and safe access
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.
What to let us know when you get in touch
What helps most when you contact us:
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- What’s prompted the survey
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
Our phone lines are open seven days a week. To book or ask a question, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
FAQs for Knapp
Do you cover smaller places like Knapp?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Is my home in Knapp listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
Will you go up on the roof?
Only if it’s safe. We check everything that can safely be seen: from ground level, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
What conditions are best for thermal imaging?
The weather makes a real difference. A sunny day beforehand, a dry surface and calm air all help. Rain, wind and heavy cloud can weaken the patterns, so we discuss the forecast when booking.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
Do I need to be at home?
Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.
Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Keep a record of when stains appear
- Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
- Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
- Heat the home normally on the days before
Buyers can use the findings when talking to the seller or agent. It is your decision how to use it, whether that’s asking for work or discussing the price.
Make sure loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Insulation is often moved when people work in the loft space.
Flying and imaging in Knapp
If your home is older, it’s worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Anyone responsible for a site like Ampfield Church of England Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. The streets around a church such as Church of St Mark are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view by drone or thermal camera helps.

- A formal energy assessment
- The condition of timbers we can’t see
- Reliable images in rain, strong wind or on a wet roof surface

The survey, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes about 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Somewhere as small as Knapp, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- You let us know about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- A full inspection and thermal imaging are carried out together.
- Moisture readings are used to check what the camera shows.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
How to prepare
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Advice
What you can safely check yourself
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.
Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.
