Thermal roof surveys in Lower Slackstead

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Lower Slackstead

Our thermal survey records how the surface temperature varies across your roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. It’s important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. Common reasons to book are wet areas near outlets and upstands and patches of heat loss across the roof, across insulated roof spaces, loft conversions and ceilings below the roof.

Somewhere as small as Lower Slackstead, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

Leave it or get it looked at?

If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Thermal imaging, checked with moisture readings, gives a clearer picture before you commit. Older and listed buildings around Lower Slackstead may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, inc. VAT, and we can help you choose.

What we cannot see

Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • An energy rating for the building
  • Confirming water without moisture readings

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and does not.

What we look at

  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Loft conversions
  • Flat roofs
  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Insulated roof spaces

What we do, step by step

We will ask a few questions first, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes an hour or two for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older rural homes like those around Lower Slackstead can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.

Before we arrive

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent

Drones, thermal imaging and Lower Slackstead roofs

Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from the ground, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. If the drone is used for your survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.

If you live in an older home near Church of All Saints, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Lower Slackstead

How do I find out if my home in Lower Slackstead is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Do you carry out roof surveys in Lower Slackstead?

Yes, Lower Slackstead is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Lower Slackstead as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, like cement roof sheets or soffits on buildings from before 2000, we flag them and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.

Can a thermal camera see water?

Not directly. It shows temperature, and wet materials frequently behave differently from dry ones. That’s why we check any patterns with moisture readings.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. Our survey looks at the roof, not the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.

What insurance do you have?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and details are available on request.

Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it is colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

Before and after the survey

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:

  • Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
  • Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
  • Clear a path to the loft hatch before we arrive
  • File the images with your roof records

If the images suggest moisture that cannot be confirmed, we will say what would help next, for example electronic leak detection or a roofer opening up a small section.

Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Lower Slackstead?

After a repair, some owners want to know whether the roof has dried out. A thermal survey with moisture readings can show whether wet areas remain when the conditions on the day are suitable.

Look out for signs like these:

  • Cold areas below the roof
  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured
  • Heat escaping through the roof
  • Missing or slipped insulation

With Mottisfont Abbey about 4.3 miles west, the area around Lower Slackstead has a long history. Photos from the air and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Questions to ask before you book

  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see

What to expect from a roof survey

Different roofs, different checks

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Slate and tile roofs are often harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We back up what the camera shows with a look in the loft where we can.

Parapets, valleys and junctions

Junctions where roofs meet walls, parapets and valleys are common places for water to get in. The camera can help show damp around these junctions.
