Practical tips

Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:

  • Check we can open the loft hatch
  • Mention any damp patches when booking
  • File the report with your home documents
  • Don’t climb onto the roof yourself

With the Standard Survey you get a follow-up consultation, while Premium includes a consultation in person. You can ask us about anything that is not clear.

Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear of leaves and moss, particularly after autumn. Leave the clearing to a professional. Clear gutters prevent a lot of damp.

Roof survey in Feering

Our roof survey gives you a clear picture of your roof’s condition. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all checked, along with the loft where it is safe to get in. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations. Where it’s relevant, the recommendations are prioritised by urgency. We survey natural slate, flat roofs and the roof space, and the problems we are asked to look at most are ridge tiles that have lifted or moved and leaking gutter joints and downpipes.

In a small place like Feering, many roofs stand in the open, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.

We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

What this survey can’t tell you

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • How the roof will behave in every kind of weather
  • Walls, floors and services below the roof
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

How it works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe vantage point, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It usually takes an hour or two for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Rural addresses near Feering can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions are welcome. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. We help you choose a Basic, Standard or Premium Survey.
  2. We arrive at the agreed time and talk through any concerns.
  3. We inspect and photograph every part of the roof we can safely see.
  4. Extra checks are carried out where your package includes them.
  5. The report is emailed with findings and recommendations.

Feering: your questions answered

Is my home in Feering listed or in a conservation area?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Will you come out to Feering?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for the job before you book. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Do you give a life expectancy for the roof?

We don’t put a figure on it, since the fixings, underlay and maintenance all play a part. What we do is explain the roof’s condition and what to deal with first.

Can you look at a roof that is joined to next door?

Yes, we can. We inspect what the owner gives us access to. Where a defect looks to be on the neighbour’s side, the report says so.

Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?

We survey seven days a week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when booking.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Feering

Letting agents and landlords in Feering book surveys as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos.

Shared roofs need a little more planning: we need access agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Tell us about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

What a roof survey looks like in Feering

If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, and a good many post-war and modern estates besides. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

Layer Marney Tower lies about 3.8 miles south-east, so building around Feering goes back a long way. Older homes in the area may have roofs that need matching materials when work is done. Living close to Brockwell Meadows is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. The streets around a church like Parish Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Leaks rarely show up right away. Insulation, plaster and timber can all be damp before you see a stain. A survey can pick up the early signs from the loft. Older cottages and farmhouses around Feering can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
