Need a roof survey in Fryerning?

What happens on the day

Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Older rural homes like those around Fryerning can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We start by hearing what you’d like checked and why.
  2. We agree a date, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows, the loft and the roof itself where it is safe.
  4. We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, and photograph what we find.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.

Before the survey

  • Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Jot down any questions you want answered

Advice

Roof survey in Fryerning: what you get

We survey roofs in Fryerning and across London and South East England. Visits run on any day of the week. We are insured for professional indemnity and public liability. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Houses, flats and commercial buildings all follow the same careful process. When you’re ready to book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Common reasons to book are leaning or weathered chimney stacks and condensation or damp timbers in the loft, on ridges, hips and valleys, the roof space and clay and concrete tiles.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photographs, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Common questions in Fryerning

How do I find out if my home in Fryerning is listed?

Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can a landlord with a rental near Ingatestone station book a roof survey?

Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.

Do you work in Fryerning?

Yes, we do. We carry out roof surveys in Fryerning.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it applies and safe. We fly a sub-250g drone and we’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.

Can you survey in bad weather?

Light rain is usually fine; heavy rain and wind are different. High wind or heavy rain can make access unsafe and ground a drone, and we’d agree another day.

Do you go up on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. Much of the survey is done from ground level, upper windows and the roof space. The Premium Survey adds a drone where it applies.

How experienced are you?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

Roof surveys in Fryerning: local notes

About 1.4 miles south-east lies Ingatestone Hall, a reminder of how long the area around Fryerning has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Clay tiles and timber weatherboarding mark out many of the older buildings in Essex, while many towns grew with post-war and newer estates. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters.

For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Mary the Virgin, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first. For landlords with property near Ingatestone station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

When you need someone else

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • A promise that the roof will not leak in future
  • Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs
  • Clay and concrete tiles
  • Chimney stacks
  • Lead flashings
  • The roof space
  • Ridges, hips and valleys
  • Natural slate

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

Our chimney check is a visual inspection of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. We’ll tell you if the flue needs a specialist.

Lead flashings and valleys

Many older houses have lead in their valleys and hidden gutters. Cracks in a lead valley can send water into the roof.

Do you need a roof survey in Fryerning?

Slates and tiles often outlast the fixings that hold them. On slate roofs, corroded nails let slates slip, which is known as ‘nail fatigue’. On tiled roofs, battens and pegs can rot, letting tiles move.

Signs worth acting on include:

  • Debris building up in roof valleys
  • Cracked mortar along the ridge
  • Leaning or weathered chimney stacks
  • Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters

If you look after a building such as Ingatestone Infant School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other.

What to check before booking

  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • What they won’t be able to tell you
  • Whether the price includes VAT
  • Their insurance cover

What a good roof survey covers

For landlords and managing agents

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when you book and we will plan the visit with that in mind.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, which can make access easier.

Before and after the survey

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Watch for slipped slates after bad weather
  • Include dormers, porches and garages when you book
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch
  • Keep a record of damp patches and dates

We email the report to you. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. Each finding is set out in plain English, with recommendations.

Plan a roof survey every few years, or sooner after severe weather. Routine surveys pick up wear before it leaks. Compare each report with the last.
