Roof survey in Hound

Our report is written in plain English, not jargon. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and where it is relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, a drone where it applies and a same-day report. Reports are sent by email. If you are worried about lifted, split or missing lead flashings and debris building up in roof valleys, we can find out what’s behind it.

Older buildings in small places like Hound may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is frequently expected.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Hound: your questions answered

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Hound, take more of a battering?

Yes, coastal weather is harder on roofs: there is more wind, and more salt in the air. Exposed details such as ridges, verges, flashings and metal fixings are the ones to watch.

Will you come out to Hound?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.

Will you climb onto the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We also inspect from the ground, from windows and vantage points, and from the loft. On Premium, a drone is used where applicable.

Can you survey a roof I share with a neighbour?

Yes, we can. We survey the parts of the roof you have access to. Where a defect looks to be on the neighbour’s side, the report says so.

How much is a survey?

Our price is from £150, including VAT. We confirm the exact price before booking. To get a price, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Do you look in the loft space?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

What we do, step by step

We check the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there’s safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how many separate roofs there are. For a village or hamlet like Hound, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. You get in touch with the address and anything you’ve noticed.
  2. We agree a date, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
  3. We inspect from ground level, from windows, from the loft space and from the roof where safe.
  4. Slates or tiles, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are all examined and photographed.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with recommendations prioritised by urgency.

Before the survey

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice

Local roofs in Hound

Hound is within about 1 mile of the coast, and wind near the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

Living close to Westwood Woodland Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. For businesses in and around places like Westquay, a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions.

Hound is about 3 miles east of Hythe, in Hampshire. We survey roofs in Hound and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. We cover towns and villages across Hampshire, from the larger towns to small villages.

Roof surveys in SO31 are booked the same way as anywhere else. If you need a roof survey at a property on Hound Road, Hound Road Gardens and Hound Close or anywhere close by, we can survey it. If you’re just outside Hound, we cover Butlocks Heath (1 mile north), Netley (1 mile north-west), Hamble-le-Rice (1 mile south-east), Old Netley (1 mile north-east) and Bursledon (1 mile north-east). We also work in nearby towns such as Winchester (13 miles north), Gosport (9 miles south-east), Havant (15 miles east), Eastleigh (6 miles north), Fareham (6 miles east) and Horndean (14 miles east).

Locally, jobs take us to homes and businesses close to Netley Abbey Infant School, Westwood Woodland Park and Prince Consort Public House. There is a railway station in Hound itself: Netley station. Nearby you’ll also find Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum (2.2 miles north-east) and Netley Castle (1 mile west). Open spaces near Hound include Mercury Marshes.

Why get it checked now?

Planned work is less stressful than an emergency. A survey lets you deal with things in order of urgency, rather than calling someone out after a storm. For older village homes like those around Hound, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Can I check my roof myself?

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, which helps when we check the roof.

How the survey changes by roof type

Clay plain and peg tiles

Where tiles hang on walls or dormers, we check them too. Gaps in tile-hanging let water reach the wall behind.

Concrete interlocking tiles

Concrete interlocking tiles are common on post-war and newer homes. They’re heavy and hard-wearing, but their surfaces weather over the years.

Signs you need a roof survey in Hound

Blocked gutters cause a surprising amount of damage. Leaves, moss and silt build up, the gutter overflows and water soaks the walls. Valley and parapet gutters can overflow inside the building.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Gaps in the roof where coverings have gone
  • Loose chimney pots
  • Torn or sagging underlay
  • Worn lead at chimneys and abutments

For landlords with property near Netley station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak.

Before booking anyone

  • Are they insured for the work?
  • Their report turnaround times
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
