Roof survey in Quarley: what you get

Our report is written in plain English, not jargon. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and we rank them by urgency where that helps. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, a drone where applicable and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. We’re often asked to look into condensation or damp timbers in the loft and cracked or blistered flat roof coverings, on lead flashings, ridges, hips and valleys and natural slate.

Somewhere as small as Quarley, homes are frequently older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on whatever is safely visible, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it’s normally the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Common questions in Quarley

Is my home in Quarley listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

I let a flat near Grateley station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you need, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.

How long will you be at the property?

On site, it normally takes about one to two hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. The report follows within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Will you check the loft?

Normally, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, such as damp timbers, staining or daylight.

How much is a survey?

Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT. We confirm the price for your roof before you book, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. To get a price, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when booking.

What insurance do you have?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

What happens on the day

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available. A typical visit takes between one and two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. In a small place like Quarley, access is typically the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You let us know the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
  3. Outside, we inspect from ground level, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
  4. Inside, we check the roof space where there is safe access.
  5. You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.

Before the survey

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Practical tips

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week, before and after a survey:

  • Take photos of any leaks as they happen
  • Check we can open the loft hatch
  • Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
  • File the report with your home documents

Where it helps, we say which items are urgent. Some faults need dealing with soon, while others can wait for planned work. That helps you decide what to do first.

Check the loft now and then, with care and a good torch. Look for water marks, damp wood and chinks of light. Take photos of anything that changes.

Common roof problems in Quarley

The underlay under the coverings matters too. Breathable membranes only appeared in the UK in the late 1990s, so many older roofs have bitumen felt underlay, and some very old roofs have no underlay at all. Torn or sagging felt lets water through.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Flashings that have come away from the wall
  • Ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs
  • Crumbling chimney pointing or cracked flaunching
  • Blocked, sagging or leaking gutters

Landlords with a home close to Grateley station may find that the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Whether the loft is part of the inspection
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • What the report includes, and whether it has photos

What to expect from a roof survey

What a roof survey looks like in Quarley

Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it’s listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.

If you live in an older home near Church of St Michael, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

Quarley is about 6 miles west of Andover, in Hampshire. Surveys in Quarley work the same way as everywhere we cover: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Quarley is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire we cover. Southampton is in our area too.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roof coverings

Ponding, blistering, splits and cracked surfaces are the common warning signs. Upstands and outlets are checked too.

Lead flashings and valleys

Most leaks begin at a joint rather than the middle of a slope. They get particular attention in every survey.

Why it is worth a survey now in Quarley

Leaving it means relying on what you can see from ground level. That can lead to the wrong work being done, or to a real problem being missed. A survey tells you what actually needs attention. For an older or listed building in a place like Quarley, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included.
