Roof survey in Temple Mills
Our report is written in plain English, not jargon. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and where it’s relevant we say what’s urgent and what can wait. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. Premium adds thermal imaging, a drone inspection where it applies and a same-day report. Each report is emailed to you. If you are worried about worn or blocked valleys and torn or sagging underlay, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces are found right across London, frequently with slate roofs, chimney stacks shared with neighbours and gutters hidden behind parapets. Slates can last a century or more, but the nails holding them corrode, and slates slip. Homes in Temple Mills are no exception. Shared chimney stacks and the lead around them are just as important to check.
We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photos show what each point refers to, with the urgent items made clear.

The survey, step by step
The visit has one job: to look at the roof as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. The visit typically takes between one and two hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. In a London area like Temple Mills, the main things to sort out are parking and access: let us know about parking, the floor the property is on, any shared entrance and loft access. We then look at whatever is safely visible from the ground, windows, the loft and, where it’s safe, the roof itself.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
- Outside, we inspect from the ground, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- Inside, we check the roof space where there’s safe access.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
Before we arrive
- Leave side gates unlocked
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed

Advice
How we price roof surveys
Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Roof area
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, from £400 including VAT. We’ll tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Getting in touch
There is no need for technical words. Just let us know:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
- Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and the days you’d prefer.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Questions from Temple Mills
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Temple Mills?
Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Temple Mills is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around London City Airport. The exact boundary is checked for each address before any flight, and a roof inside it needs permission before we fly. London’s airspace includes flight restriction zones around Heathrow, London City Airport and London Heliport, and restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs. Every London address is checked against them before a flight. Strong wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Is my home in Temple Mills listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it’s worth checking before planning any.
What’s covered in a roof inspection?
Every part of the roof we can safely see: the slates or tiles, ridges, valleys, flashings, chimneys, gutters and roof space. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check, and Premium adds thermal imaging and a drone where applicable.
How long will you be at the property?
On site, it usually takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. The report follows within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
Can you look at a roof that’s joined to next door?
Yes, we can. We inspect what the owner gives us access to. Where a defect looks to be on the neighbour’s side, the report says so.
Do you work in Temple Mills?
Yes, we do. We carry out roof surveys in Temple Mills.
When will the report arrive?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard within 24 to 48 hours and Premium the same day. We send it by email.
Roof surveys in Temple Mills: local notes
Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces frequently have Welsh slate roofs. Many have butterfly roofs draining to a central valley gutter, with parapet walls and gutters hidden behind them. If your home in Temple Mills is one of them, lead flashings, party-wall upstands and shared chimney stacks are part of the picture too. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look. Sutton House, about 1.6 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Temple Mills. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.
If you run a business near Westfield Stratford City, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. Take a building like Chobham Academy: a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Do you need a roof survey in Temple Mills?
Weather is the main thing that wears a roof down. Strong gusts work at anything that is not firmly fixed, while rain gets into every gap. What starts as one slipped slate can become a leak.
We’re often asked to look at:
- Worn lead at chimneys and abutments
- Slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles
- Water stains on rafters and ceiling joists
- Leaking gutter joints and downpipes
If you let a flat or house near Stratford International station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let.

Tips that help
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:
- Leave roof access to professionals
- Gather any paperwork for past roof work
- Hold on to the report for future surveys
- Take photos of any leaks as they happen
Where it helps, we say which items are urgent. Some things need prompt attention, others can be planned for. That helps you decide what to do first.
Have the roof surveyed every few years, and after major storms. Regular checks catch problems while they’re small. Compare each report with the last.
