Roof surveys in Whitchurch: local notes
If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
The streets around a church such as Church of All Hallows are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Landlords with a home close to Whitchurch (Hampshire) station may find that the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Whitchurch Church of England Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale.

How a roof survey works in Whitchurch
Many homes have several roofs, not just one. Flat roofs over extensions, garages and dormers are common in felt, EPDM rubber, GRP or asphalt. They’re included alongside the main roof, including signs of standing water, splits and tired upstands. A flat roof typically wears out sooner than a pitched one. A felt roof frequently lasts around 15 to 20 years, and GRP up to about 30. We’re often asked to look into flashings that have come away from the wall and blocked, sagging or leaking gutters, on chimney stacks, lead flashings and ridges, hips and valleys.
Houses in smaller places like Whitchurch can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. Checking those edges shows whether anything has begun to work loose. Once one ridge tile or slate moves, wind gets under the next one too.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Landlord and commercial surveys in Whitchurch
Letting agents can arrange access with tenants. Surveys run on any day of the week, which helps when tenants work during the week.
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters, which helps with budgets and planning.
Why it is worth a survey now in Whitchurch
Leaks rarely show up right away. Insulation, plaster and timber can all be damp before you see a stain. From inside the loft space, we can frequently spot it sooner. In an older home around Whitchurch, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, and that is a much bigger job than the original defect.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before booking.

What a roof survey does not cover
A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- Walls, floors and services below the roof
- Faults hidden behind ceilings or boarding
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads

What happens on the day
When we arrive, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where it applies. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and more on a big or complicated roof. In a smaller place like Whitchurch, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: the parts that need calm, dry weather are planned around it.
- You tell us the address, the type of roof and what’s worrying you.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday.
- Outside, we inspect from the ground, windows and other safe vantage points, and from the roof where safe.
- We then look in the loft for damp, staining and the condition of the underlay.
- You receive the report with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency.
Before the survey
- Make sure we can get to the back of the property
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Make sure pets are kept safely away

Whitchurch questions
Is my home in Whitchurch listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Can a landlord with a rental near Whitchurch (Hampshire) station book a roof survey?
Of course. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and the report can go straight to you or your agent.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys on any day of the week. To arrange a date, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.
Is a roof survey the same as a structural survey?
No. If we see signs that need an engineer, like serious sagging, we will say so. We don’t provide structural calculations.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we are allowed to reach, and the report makes that clear.
Different roofs, different checks
Chimney stacks
Each chimney’s pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings are looked at, as far as we can safely see them. We note any lean or loose pots.
Concrete interlocking tiles
Ridge and verge mortar on concrete tile roofs can crack and fall away. We check for loose ridge tiles and missing mortar.
