What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Wind can pull the flashings away from a chimney. We photograph any we find.

Flat roof coverings

Branches and debris can damage flat roofs or block outlets. We record what we find.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Ealing

After a storm, safety comes first. Take photos from ground level or from windows, and don’t climb onto the roof. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. If you are worried about ridge tiles that have come loose and gutters pulled loose in the wind, we can find out what’s behind it.

In a London flat, water can travel some way before it shows. That makes the source hard to pin down, and finding it matters for whoever has to deal with it. We look at what we’re given access to in Ealing, inside and out. Tell us when the water shows, and in what kind of weather.

It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

When to book a survey in Ealing

Flat roofs can be damaged too. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.

Here are some of the things we see frequently:

  • Broken or displaced guttering
  • Ridge tiles that have come loose
  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Lead lifted at abutments

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Ealing Independent College, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside.

What to check before booking

  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • When you will get the report
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • How long they’ve been surveying roofs

What a roof survey includes

Checking the roof from the ground

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

What this survey can’t tell you

It is useful to know what a survey will not do before you book:

  • A price for the repairs
  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • Acting for you with the insurer

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you before booking. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Gutters and fascias

Ealing questions

Do you carry out roof surveys in Ealing?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Ealing as anywhere else.

Is parking a problem for a survey in Ealing?

London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway as you book. That way the visit can be planned around it.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only if it’s safe. We check everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. It is a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Safely, from the ground or a window. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. With binoculars, you can see a lot from ground level, and we will record the rest.

What’s the best way to book?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Give us the address and a few details about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. We survey on any day of the week.

What does a storm damage report cost?

A storm damage report starts from £150. Commercial and larger roofs are quoted on size. The report doesn’t include repair costs.

The survey, step by step

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. Most visits take about 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. From the street, a London terrace normally shows only its front slope or parapet, so in Ealing we work round the house, using the street, the windows, the loft and any safe vantage point behind it. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it is safe.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Preparing for the visit

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Check we can get to the back of the property
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Storm damage roof reports around Ealing

About 0.1 miles east lies Pitzhanger Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Ealing has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. In outer London, interwar semis with hipped, tiled roofs sit alongside older slate-roofed terraces. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Different coverings let water in at different points, which shapes where the search starts.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for instance near London Designer Outlet, a quick answer on where water is coming in keeps a business running. Landlords with a home close to Ealing Broadway station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.
