Storm damage roof reports in East Sheen

About our storm damage roof report in East Sheen

Wear and tear is usually excluded from home insurance. So it matters whether the damage came from the storm or from a roof that was already worn. We note signs of each: fresh breaks and recently moved slates or tiles, and older problems such as corroded nails or worn mortar. We give an honest view of what we see. Your insurer then decides how its policy applies. If you are worried about new damp or leaks inside and lead lifted at abutments, we can find out what’s behind it, on ridges and hips, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs alike.

Water getting into a London home often comes from a detail you cannot see from the street: the valley gutter in a butterfly roof, a parapet gutter, a chimney flashing or the flat roof over a rear extension. For a leak or storm damage in East Sheen, those hidden details are where the inspection begins. A hidden gutter that overflows can send water a long way before it shows.

You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

How the survey works

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is frequently on a shared landing. Where that is the case, access needs agreeing with whoever controls that landing. Otherwise, the visit in East Sheen runs like any other.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
  3. The damage is recorded with photos, area by area.
  4. We check whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
  • Keep pets in another room
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

East Sheen roofs and the weather

Chiswick House, about 1.3 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around East Sheen. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters. Outer London has lots of Victorian and Edwardian terraces with slate roofs, but also a great many interwar semis, often with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles. Hips, bay roofs and later loft conversions are typical of those semis, if your home is one of them. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.

Anyone responsible for a site like Thomson House School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. Trees in and around Palewell Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you live in an older home near All Saints' Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Your policy may say how quickly you need to report damage. Let your insurer know early, and check what your policy asks for. An independent report can follow. Work on a London roof is rarely simple to arrange, with parking, neighbours and access all to think about. That’s a good reason to find problems early, while there is time to plan.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

Honest limits

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Gutters and fascias
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Chimney stacks

  • Flashings

How the survey changes by roof type

Chimney stacks

Stacks with existing defects tend to suffer more in storms. Our report notes recent damage and older defects.

Lead flashings

Flashings with older defects often fail in high winds. Our report separates fresh damage from older wear where we can.

What a survey costs

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Which survey package you book
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address and some details. We will confirm the figure before booking.

Booking your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. Please include:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • When you need the report by
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Anything about access we should know

A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: ring 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we’ll ask about the building and what you need. You’ll have a price before anything is arranged.

Tips that help

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • Keep any slates, tiles or debris that fall, if it’s safe to do so
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • File receipts for anything you pay for
  • Photograph the damage safely from below

Your insurer may send a loss adjuster to look at the damage. Our report gives you an independent record alongside theirs.

Store invoices and reports for any roof work. They help show the roof was in good order before a storm.

Common questions in East Sheen

Is parking a problem for a survey in East Sheen?

It can be, so it helps to let us know about permits, visitor bays or off-street space as you book. The visit is then planned around what’s available.

Is my home in East Sheen listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do I have to be there for the survey?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.

Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?

It depends on your policy. Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies. Your policy document will say.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

Raise it with your insurer first. If it is not resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman asks about storm conditions, whether the damage is consistent with a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

Should I go up on the roof to take photos?

Stay off the roof. Take photos from ground level or from windows. Record the date and any damage inside as well.
