How a roof survey works in SW14

Our roof surveys cover SW14 and the wider South East. Visits run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, and bring 20+ years’ experience. You get a written report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. Whether it is a house, a flat or a commercial building, the process is the same. When you are ready to book, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email. Common reasons to book are leaking gutter joints and downpipes and ponding, splits or blisters on flat roofs, on ridges, hips and valleys, clay and concrete tiles and the roof space.

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit normally takes roughly 1–2 hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys.

  1. You pick the package that suits your roof.
  2. On the day, we start by hearing what you’ve noticed.
  3. Coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters are inspected and photographed.
  4. Moisture detection, a structural check, thermal imaging or a drone are added where your package includes them.
  5. You get a written report with photos and clear recommendations.

Arrange a survey

Not sure which survey you need? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will explain the options and the price.

Around Mortlake

We work in homes and buildings around Hare and Hounds pub, Thomson House School and Ibstock Place School. You will also find All Saints' Church (less than half a mile south-east), Richmond Park Academy (under half a mile south-east) and Palewell Park (0.5 miles south). Mortlake has its own railway station: Mortlake station. Other landmarks nearby include Ubuntu Museum: African Museum of Humanity (1.1 miles south-east) and Barnes Hospital (within half a mile east). For a walk, there’s Richmond Hill and Kew Gardens Lake.

Homes and roofs across SW14

Across SW14, from Richmond upon Thames, Barnes and Chiswick outwards, roofs range from old slate and clay tile to modern concrete tiles and flat roofs. Chimneys, valleys, flashings and gutters are normally where the work is.

Our surveys reach from London out to Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Essex, the Thames Valley, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, SW14 included. Visits run on weekdays and at weekends.

Mortlake: Chiswick House, about 1.3 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Mortlake. If yours is one of the older homes, the roof may have been repaired many times, and the survey records how each part is holding up. If you run a business near Putney Exchange, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when booking.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in.

Why get it checked now?

Planned work is less stressful than an emergency. A survey lets you deal with things in order of urgency, rather than waiting for something to fail.

Questions to ask before booking

  • Will the report include photos?
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • What experience they bring
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

How we price roof surveys

We confirm the price for your survey before you book. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

Getting in touch

If you can, have these to hand when you get in touch:

  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • The property’s address and postcode
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and the days you’d prefer.

Why roofs fail

Weather is the main thing that wears a roof down. Strong gusts work at anything that isn’t firmly fixed, and rain finds any gap it can. What starts as one slipped slate can become a leak.

Here are some of the things we see often:

  • Gutters that overflow in heavy rain
  • Cracked or blistered flat roof coverings
  • Lifted, split or missing lead flashings
  • Leaning or weathered chimney stacks

Roof by roof

Clay plain and peg tiles

Clay tiles commonly last 50 years or more. Slipped, cracked and missing tiles are recorded, and for spalling where the surface has flaked.

Flat roof coverings

Repeated coatings can hide what’s underneath. We say what we can see and when a closer look would need opening up.

FAQs for SW14

What’s covered in a roof inspection?

We check the coverings, ridges, hips, valleys, flashings, chimneys and gutters, plus the loft space where there’s safe access. The report includes photos and recommendations.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator.

Is your survey a structural engineer’s report?

No. Our survey looks at the condition of the roof, and Standard and Premium include structural checks. It doesn’t include structural calculations, which need an engineer.

Are you insured?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.

Does someone need to be in?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Do you cover SW14?

Yes. We cover SW14 and the rest of Greater London, as part of our work across London and the South East. To book, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

How long does the visit take?

On site, it usually takes about one to two hours for an ordinary house roof, and longer if there are extensions, dormers or several chimneys. Report times depend on the package.
