Storm damage roof reports near Hawthorn

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Hawthorn

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Take photos from ground level or from windows, and do not climb onto the roof. Emergency temporary protection, such as covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Hold on to receipts for anything you pay for. We survey flashings, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs, and people most often book us about damaged ridges and hips and water coming in after the storm.

Being in a small place like Hawthorn makes no difference to how a leak or storm damage is looked at: the journey and access are just planned beforehand. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Tips from our surveys

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:

  • Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
  • Check how your policy defines a storm
  • Note the date and time you first saw the damage
  • Take photos from the ground or a window, never by climbing

Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.

Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

Honest limits

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
  • How your policy defines a storm
  • The outcome of a claim

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey before booking. What a survey covers and does not.

What this survey covers

  • Gutters and fascias
  • Ridges and hips
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flashings

What we do, step by step

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. Around Hawthorn, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it’s useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • If it isn’t your property yet, arrange access through the agent

How to book

Getting a price is simple: just ring 07833 053749 or email us and give us some details about the property and we’ll point you to the right survey. The price is agreed up front.

Why it is worth a survey now in Hawthorn

It helps to get a record soon after the storm, while the damage is fresh. Further storms and quick fixes can make the picture less clear. Older cottages and farmhouses around Hawthorn can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Prices start from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridge and hip tiles

Ridge and hip tiles take the full force of the wind. We record any that have lifted, cracked or come away.

Flat roof coverings

Edge trims and laps are often where flat roof coverings start to peel back. The report notes signs of recent damage and older wear.

Storm damage roof reports in Hawthorn: local notes

The coast is about 2 miles or less from Hawthorn, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. In a coastal gale, rain is driven sideways into laps, verges and flashings, while salt slowly corrodes metal fixings and flashings. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.

The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary the Virgin are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. Landlords with a home close to Herne Bay station may find that a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. Homes near green spaces such as Bishopstone Cliffs can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn.

Hawthorn is about 2 miles east of Herne Bay, in Kent. Hawthorn gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Our area takes in places right across Kent, from the larger towns to small villages. There’s also a page for Canterbury.

Common questions in Hawthorn

Is my home in Hawthorn listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Is Hawthorn within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

How many surveys have you done?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have completed over 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

Will you deal with the insurance company for me?

No. We aren’t loss adjusters and do not act for you with the insurer. We give you an independent report of the damage for you to send to your insurer.

How long does the survey take?

Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The written report follows by email, on the timescale of your package.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it’s safe to do so. We inspect what can be seen safely: from ground level, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
