How the survey changes by roof type

Lead flashings

When flashings lift, water can get behind them. We note where this has happened and any damp inside.

Ridge and hip tiles

The ridge and hips are among the most exposed parts of a roof. We record any that have lifted, cracked or come away.

About our storm damage roof report in Hyde End

Our storm damage report starts from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for that. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. What you get is an independent record of the damage and what seems to have caused it. We’re often asked to look into flashings pulled away from walls or stacks and loose or broken chimney pots and cowls, across chimney stacks, flashings and slate and tile slopes.

For a small place like Hyde End, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photographs of the water coming in, they help as well.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

The survey, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we hear what you’ve seen, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and record our findings for the written report. It normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a small place like Hyde End, access is normally the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You let us know when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there is access.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
  5. You get a written report you can pass to your insurer.

Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Hyde Heath Infant School, on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain. If you own a rental within reach of Great Missenden station, tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.

  • A decision on your insurance claim
  • Negotiating a claim settlement
  • Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up

Hyde End questions

How do I find out if my home in Hyde End is listed?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It is worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Is Hyde End within the area you cover?

Yes, Hyde End is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

The first step is a complaint to your insurer. If you are still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we can’t predict the outcome.

What do I do if water is coming in?

Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. If it’s safe, photograph the damage before it’s covered. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

How much is a storm damage roof report?

Prices start from £150, including VAT. Larger or more complex roofs are quoted for their size. It doesn’t include repair costs, so you’ll need a roofer’s quote for those.

How long will you be at the property?

Expect it to take about 1–2 hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. The written report follows by email.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Only from ground level or from windows. Do not use a ladder or go onto the roof. With binoculars, you can see a lot from ground level and we’ll inspect the rest from safe positions.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Letting agents can arrange access with tenants, at a time agreed ahead of time. Surveys run on weekdays and at weekends, which can make access easier.

Why it is worth a survey now in Hyde End

Before temporary repairs, photograph the damage from ground level if it is safe. That keeps a record of how it looked. Outbuildings and barns around Hyde End are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before booking.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
