What a storm damage roof report doesn’t cover

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Keep these in mind:

  • Repair costs or quotes for the work
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes

If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What we check

  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips
  • Chimney stacks
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Gutters and fascias

Storm damage roof report in Isleworth: what you get

Our storm damage report starts from £150. It is a written report with photos, sent by email. It is not a repair quote and does not include repair costs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. The insurer may still send a loss adjuster of its own. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. We’re frequently asked to look into holes or cracks caused by debris and flat roof edges peeled back, on flashings, slate and tile slopes and chimney stacks.

In converted houses and blocks across London, water from a roof can run a long way before it shows on a ceiling, sometimes in a different flat from the one below the defect. That makes the source hard to pin down, and finding it matters for whoever has to deal with it. In Isleworth, we inspect what we can reach safely and are given access to. Let us know when the water shows, and in what kind of weather.

Where we cannot see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Isleworth

Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, and the report can go to both. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

Freeholders and residents’ companies use a roof report to plan and budget, putting the urgent items at the top.

Different roofs, different checks

Flat roof coverings

Lifted trims and laps are common after a storm. The report notes signs of recent damage and older wear.

Ridge and hip tiles

A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. Each one is recorded with photos.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Isleworth

With Syon House about 0.9 miles north-east, Isleworth sits in an area with a long building history. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Isleworth is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

Homes near green spaces such as Old Deer Park can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. If you look after a building such as St Mary's Catholic Primary School, water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. If you own a rental within reach of Isleworth station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Isleworth

Is my home in Isleworth listed or in a conservation area?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Isleworth?

It depends on the street. Where there are permit zones, a visitor permit or nearby pay-and-display bay works well.

Will you walk on the roof?

Only where it is safe to do so. We check everything that can be seen safely: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.

Can I check the roof after a storm?

Safely, from ground level or a window. Don’t use a ladder or go onto the roof. With binoculars, you can see a lot from the ground and we will inspect the rest from safe positions.

How do I arrange a storm damage roof report in Isleworth?

To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.

How long is the visit?

Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The report follows by email.

My storm claim was turned down. What now?

Start by complaining to the insurer. If it is not resolved, the Financial Ombudsman Service may be able to help. The Ombudsman looks at whether there were storm conditions, whether the damage fits a storm and whether the storm was the main cause.

What we do, step by step

We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. For a visit in Isleworth, parking and access are the things to plan: tell us about permits, visitor bays or off-street space, which floor the property is on and how to get into the loft. We then look at everything that’s safely in view from the ground, windows, the loft and, where it is safe, the roof itself.

  1. First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
  2. We look at the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Before we arrive

  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Let us know where we can park nearby
  • Leave a clear route to the loft

Checking the roof from ground level

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Why get it checked now?

The sooner the damage is recorded, the clearer the evidence. Further storms and quick fixes can make the picture less clear. Many older London roofs have only old felt under the slates, or no underlay at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.
