How a storm damage roof report works in Knaphill

A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. It sets out what is damaged, with photos, and what we think the likely cause is. It’s yours to pass to your insurer. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. We’re not loss adjusters, and we cannot tell you whether a claim will succeed. Typical surveys look at torn or lifted flat roof coverings and loose or torn flashings, on gutters and fascias, flat roofs and slate and tile slopes.

In older homes around places like Knaphill, the underlay may be old bitumen felt, or there may be none at all. Without a sound underlay, any gap in the coverings lets water straight through. Finding where it gets in, and whether it’s old wear or new damage, decides what comes next. Wet battens and insulation in the loft are often the first clue.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

The survey, step by step

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Knaphill is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.

  1. You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
  2. We check inside, including the loft where there’s access, for water damage.
  3. The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. We record fresh damage and older defects.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Advice

Knaphill questions

Is Knaphill in the area you cover?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and Knaphill is part of that. You can call 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details, and we will talk through which survey suits.

Is Knaphill within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Do you use drones?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

What’s the best way to book?

Just phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed, and anything out of sight is recorded in the report.

Will you deal with the insurance company for me?

No. Our report is an independent record for you to use. Your insurer may appoint its own loss adjuster.

What if my insurer declines the claim?

Complain to your insurer first. If you’re still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. An independent report can add to your evidence, though we cannot predict the outcome.

Checking the roof from the ground

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

Honest limits

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you. What a survey covers and does not.

Knaphill roofs and the weather

If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area. Older houses across Surrey frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.

If you own a rental within reach of Brookwood station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Homes near green spaces like Brookwood Lye can get more leaves in their gutters in autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.

Signs you need a storm damage roof report in Knaphill

Storms don’t only affect pitched roofs. Coverings can tear or peel back at the edges, and water can pond where outlets are blocked. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Gutters pulled loose in the wind
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Cowls or aerials dislodged in the wind
  • Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St Hugh of Lincoln's Church, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.

Questions to ask before booking

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Whether VAT is added on top
