How a storm damage roof report works in Northfields
After a storm, safety comes first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. Emergency temporary protection, like covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. We survey chimney stacks, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are ridge tiles that have come loose and stains appearing after strong winds.
In London, leaks often start somewhere hidden: the valley gutter in a butterfly roof, a parapet gutter, a chimney flashing or the flat roof over a rear extension. For a leak or storm damage in Northfields, those hidden details are where the inspection begins. Water from a hidden gutter can run along joists and show up a room or two away.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent, whichever applies.

What we can’t see
A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. Its limits include:
- The outcome of a claim
- The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
- Damage hidden under coverings or inside the structure, without opening up
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Flashings
- Gutters and fascias
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs
- Ridges and hips
- Slate and tile slopes
What happens on the day
Expect us to ask a few questions before we start, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes between one and two hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. London terraces rarely offer a view of the whole roof from one spot, so a visit in Northfields moves between viewpoints: the pavement, upstairs windows, the loft and any safe spot at the back. If other people live in the building, tell us who can let us into the shared parts.
- We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
- The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows and from the roof space where it is safe.
- We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
- The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
- The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.
Before the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Keep pets in another room
- Make sure the loft hatch can be reached

What affects the price in Northfields
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. These are the things that affect it:
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- The roof’s overall size
- House, block, shop or office
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
Helping us price your survey
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:
- Dates you’re working to, such as exchange
- What kind of property and roof it is
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
Most bookings start with a short call: call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Useful tips for Northfields property owners
A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Our tips:
- Keep receipts for any emergency work
- Check how your policy defines a storm
- Photograph damage inside the house too
- Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
You’ll need a roofer’s quote for the repairs. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.
Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. They can damage the roof in high winds.
Roof by roof
Slate roofs
In high winds, slates can slip or go, often where nails have rusted. Our report notes moved slates and any sign of older corrosion.
Lead flashings
Old flashings that were already loose can give way in a storm. Our report separates fresh damage from older wear where we can.
What a storm damage roof report looks like in Northfields
With Boston Manor about 0.5 miles south, Northfields sits in an area with a long building history. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. Bay roofs, hip ridges and dormers from later loft conversions are the details that set these houses apart. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
Landlords with a home close to Brentford station may find that a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer right away. If you run a business near Treaty Centre, water through a ceiling can damage stock and close a sales floor, so the source needs finding fast. Trees in and around Lammas Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and falls from height are serious. That part is for a survey.
Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Northfields
Is my home in Northfields listed or in a conservation area?
Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is Northfields in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Northfields as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
How long will you be at the property?
It usually takes about one to two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. The written report follows by email.
Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?
Emergency temporary protection is a job for a roofer. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. Our report then records the roof.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning, with whoever owns or manages the building. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll explain what’s needed.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We look at the roof, not the whole building, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Do you look in the loft space?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there’s safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.
