Storm damage roof report in Northiam
A storm damage roof report is an independent record of the damage to your roof after a storm. It sets out what is damaged, with photographs, and what we think the likely cause is. It is yours to pass to your insurer. The decision on any claim rests with your insurer and its policy wording. We are not loss adjusters, and we can’t tell you whether a claim will succeed. We survey ridges and hips, slate and tile slopes and flashings, and people most often book us about ridge tiles that have come loose and torn or lifted flat roof coverings.
For a small place like Northiam, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Let us know where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, along with any repairs done before. Photos of the stain and of the roof from outside are helpful too.
The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Leaks and storm damage in Northiam
Great Dixter, about 0.5 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Northiam. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings, alongside oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
Take a building like Northiam Church of England Primary School: on a building that size, finding the source of a drip means looking well beyond the stain.

Questions from Northiam
Do you cover smaller places like Northiam?
Yes, Northiam is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
Do you cover Northiam?
Yes, Northiam is within the area we cover. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the property, and we’ll talk through which survey suits.
Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?
We can’t say whether a claim will be paid. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.
Do you use drones?
Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We don’t sample or test for asbestos. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.
Should I go up on the roof to take photos?
Safely, from the ground or a window. Do not use a ladder or go onto the roof. With binoculars, you can see a lot from ground level and we will inspect the rest from safe positions.
Why it is worth a survey now in Northiam
A clear, independent record helps you explain the damage to your insurer. It records the damage and what seems to have caused it, so you’re not relying only on your own photos. Older and listed buildings around Northiam may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Northiam
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client, photographs included.
Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.
Before and after the survey
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
- Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
- Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
- Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
You’ll need a roofer’s quote for the repairs. They can use our report to see what needs doing.
Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. They can damage the roof in high winds.
The survey, step by step
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. It normally takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Northiam frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- We check inside, including the loft where there is access, for water damage.
- We view the roof from safe positions.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
Getting ready for the survey
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Let us know about parking near the property
