How a storm damage roof report works in Old Windsor

Each roof is looked at from the safest viewpoints available: from ground level, from windows and higher points, from the loft space and from the roof where it’s safe. We photograph and describe each area of damage. We note any part we couldn’t see. You get a written report with photos to give to your insurer. We survey flat roofs, slate and tile slopes and gutters and fascias, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are damaged pots on the stack and loose or torn flashings.

In older homes around places like Old Windsor, the underlay may be old bitumen felt, or there may be none at all. Once the slates or tiles let water past, there is little to stop it reaching the ceiling. Whether it’s long-term wear or recent damage makes a difference to what happens next. Wet battens and insulation in the loft are frequently the first clue.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly.

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roof coverings

Edge trims and laps are often where flat roof coverings start to peel back. The report notes signs of recent damage and older wear.

Ridge and hip tiles

A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. Each one is recorded with photos.

Leaks and storm damage in Old Windsor

Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. About 1.3 miles north-west lies Frogmore House, a reminder of how long the area around Old Windsor has been built on. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.

If you look after a building such as King's Court First School, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. Trees in and around Windsor Great Park shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters. Landlords with a home close to Sunnymeads station may find that tracing a leak quickly matters when a tenant is living with it.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Old Windsor

Do you carry out roof surveys in Old Windsor?

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is my home in Old Windsor listed or in a conservation area?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

What if the roof was already worn?

Wear and tear is typically excluded from home insurance. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so it’s clear what we found. How the policy applies is up to your insurer.

How experienced are you?

More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.

How long is the visit?

Time on site depends on the roof; most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much of the roof was hit. The written report follows by email.

Do I need to be at home?

It depends on what we need to see. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in; we will agree the details when booking.

Do you look in the roof space?

If there is a loft and safe access to it, yes. From inside, the underside of the roof often shows damp, staining or daylight that cannot be seen from outside.

Honest limits

A survey is a careful look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:

  • Your insurer’s view of the claim
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Chimney stacks
  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Flashings
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flat roofs
  • Ridges and hips

How the survey works

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. For a survey in Old Windsor, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. First you give us the date of the storm and what you’ve noticed, inside and out.
  2. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows and from the roof space where it is safe.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
  5. We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets in another room
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Jot down any questions you want answered

Booking a survey

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from the ground or a window, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To get started, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Advice

Tips that help

There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:

  • Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
  • Take photos of stains and damp inside
  • Read your policy wording on storm damage
  • Keep receipts for any emergency work

If a claim is declined and you disagree, the first step is a complaint to the insurer. After that, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Have overhanging branches looked at by a tree surgeon. Branches can hit or scrape the roof in a storm.

What a survey costs

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

Getting in touch

A little information up front helps. Please include:

  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Where the property is, with the postcode

Every survey is priced before it’s booked, so you know the cost up front. Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT. To book, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
