Broken or missing tiles leave the underlay exposed to rain. We photograph each gap.

Flashings around stacks can lift in strong winds. We photograph any we find.
How a storm damage roof report works in Pitch Place
When a storm has damaged your roof, a written record can help you explain it to your insurer. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We are not loss adjusters and cannot tell you if your claim will succeed. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. Typical surveys look at loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and loose or torn flashings, across flashings, flat roofs and chimney stacks.
Many homes in small places like Pitch Place face open ground, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, so it pays to find the cause quickly. A record with photos is useful if you need to show the damage to anyone else.
We keep jargon out of it: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, along with how urgent it is.

Tips that help
Getting the most from a storm damage roof report starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:
- Hold on to fallen pieces of the roof where you can
- Take photos from ground level or a window, never by climbing
- Report the damage to your insurer as soon as you can
- Check how your policy defines a storm
If anything in the report isn’t clear, just ask us. Standard Surveys come with a follow-up consultation, and Premium Surveys with an in-person one.
A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.
What we’re asked to look at in Pitch Place
Insurers often want evidence of what has been damaged and why. A written report with photos gives you something clear to pass on. The decision still rests with the insurer.
Here are some of the things we see often:
- Slipped or missing slates or tiles
- Loose or torn flashings
- Holes or cracks caused by debris
- Gutters pulled loose in the wind
Trees in and around The Flashes shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Your questions about storm damage roof reports in Pitch Place
Do you cover Pitch Place?
Yes, Pitch Place is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Pitch Place as anywhere else.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Pitch Place?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
How long will you be at the property?
That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take about 1–2 hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. The written report follows by email.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings.
What’s the best way to book?
Simply call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that in advance, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only when it is safe. Most of what we need can be seen from safe viewpoints, the loft and, where it applies, a drone.
DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
What a storm damage roof report does not cover
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- What your policy covers, which depends on its wording
- Whether your insurer will pay the claim
- Negotiating a claim settlement
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Flat roofs
- Ridges and hips
- Gutters and fascias
- Slate and tile slopes
- Flashings
- Chimney stacks
How it works
Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement, as far as the space allows. All in, the survey usually takes about 1–2 hours for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a village or hamlet like Pitch Place, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.
- First we go through when the storm hit and what you’ve noticed.
- We check the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Each area of damage is photographed and described.
- We note the likely cause and any signs of older wear.
- We send you the report by email for your insurer.
Preparing for the visit
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Move anything stored under the loft hatch
Booking a survey
A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will ask a few questions about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in Pitch Place
There are about 500,000 buildings on England’s list of listed buildings, and around 10,000 conservation areas. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so check with the council. Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it is detailed.
If you own a rental within reach of Witley station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. If you live in an older home near Church of St Michael and All Angels, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.
