Independent storm damage roof reports in Shere

Leave it or get it looked at?

Knowing whether older wear played a part helps you understand your position. We record storm damage and older defects, so you know what the roof shows. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Shere, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us about the roof. We will confirm the figure before booking.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Shere

A storm damage roof report is priced from £150. You get a written report with photos by email. It doesn’t price the repairs, so ask a roofer to quote for the work. Your insurer may also send its own loss adjuster. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause. Typical surveys look at broken or displaced guttering and damaged flat roof membrane, on flat roofs, flashings and slate and tile slopes.

Roofs in small places like Shere often stand in the open, where storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hardest. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Questions from Shere

Do you carry out roof surveys in Shere?

Yes, Shere is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Shere?

Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the local council can tell you about conservation areas. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Our report may flag materials that could contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

How experienced are you?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

What wind speed counts as a storm?

Each policy has its own definition. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but your policy sets the actual test.

Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?

Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. Take photos from ground level first if it is safe. Keep receipts for any emergency work.

How the survey works

We will ask a few questions first, such as when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes an hour or two at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Cottages and farmhouses around Shere frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely, and anything we cannot see is noted.

  1. We note the date of the storm and the damage you’ve seen.
  2. We check the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. We record and photograph the damage.
  4. The report notes whether the damage fits a storm, older wear or both.
  5. You get a written report to pass to your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

Checking the roof from the ground

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking, as it helps us focus the survey.

What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

Leaks and storm damage in Shere

Many older homes in Surrey have handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in. Historic houses like Hatchlands Park, about 2.6 miles north, show how far back building in the area around Shere goes. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

For landlords with property near Gomshall station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. Living close to Colekitchen Down is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls. If you look after a building such as Shere CofE Aided Infant School, tracing a leak on a big roof starts with where the water appears and works back.

Shere is about 5 miles east of Guildford, in Surrey. Anywhere in Shere, we can come and survey your property, on a weekday, Saturday or Sunday. We cover towns and villages across Surrey, large and small.

Surveys in GU5 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You’ll find streets such as Lower Street, Orchard Road and Shere Lane, all of which we cover. Close by, we survey roofs in Gomshall (1 mile east), Albury Heath (1 mile south-west), Little London (1 mile south-west), Albury (1 mile west) and Abinger Hammer (1 mile east). Within a short drive, we also cover Guildford (5 miles west), Woking (8 miles north-west), Camberley (14 miles north-west), Epsom (12 miles north-east), Horley (13 miles east) and Redhill (13 miles east).

Landlords, agents and block managers in Shere

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work.

What we look for on each type of roof

Lead flashings

When flashings lift, water can get behind them. The report records the flashing and any damp inside.

Ridge and hip tiles

A lifted ridge tile can let water into the roof. We photograph and describe the damage.
