About our storm damage roof report in St John's

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Hold on to receipts for anything you pay for. We survey ridges and hips, gutters and fascias and slate and tile slopes, and common reasons people get in touch are lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles and water coming in after the storm.

Older cottages and houses around St John's may have roofs with little or no underlay. Without a sound underlay, any gap in the coverings lets water straight through. Whether it is long-term wear or recent damage makes a difference to what happens next. Wet battens and insulation in the loft are frequently the first clue.

You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

Tips from our surveys

Getting the most from a storm damage roof report starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Tips:

  • Photograph damage inside the house too
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage
  • Arrange temporary cover with a roofer if rain is getting in

For repair costs, ask a roofer to quote. The report gives them a clear list of the damage.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Overflowing gutters can make storm damage worse.

St John's: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like St John's?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

How do I find out if my home in St John's is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

How strong does the wind have to be for a storm claim?

It varies by policy. About 55 mph is a common figure in many policies, but check your own wording.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

Only your insurer can decide that. We record the damage, with photographs and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.

Will you check the loft?

If it is needed and safe to reach, yes. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging, as far as the space allows.

How should I record storm damage myself?

Safely, from the ground or a window. Never climb onto a roof after a storm. Binoculars can help you see damage from below, and we will record the rest.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in if we’re looking inside or in the loft. Access is agreed with you when booking.

The survey, step by step

We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. The inspection then takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. For a survey in St John's, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. You tell us when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. We inspect the roof from safe viewpoints and from the loft where there’s access.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. The likely cause is recorded, along with any evidence of older wear.
  5. We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.

How to prepare

  • Find any records of previous roof work

What we look for on each type of roof

Chimney stacks

Pots, cowls and aerials on chimneys can be damaged or dislodged in a storm. We record any damage we can see.

Flat roof coverings

On flat roofs, storms can lift edges and tear membranes. Damage is photographed and described.

What affects the price in St John's

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. That comes down to:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
  • The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
  • If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone

Every price we give includes VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.

Helping us price your survey

To price your survey accurately, we will ask about:

  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
  • The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat

If you’re buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so you have the findings in time to act on them before you exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or send us an email when you are ready.

What we cannot see

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • Repair costs or quotes for the work

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.

  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flashings
  • Flat roofs

Leave it or get it looked at?

Leaving storm damage can let water into the loft space and rooms below. That can add to the damage and make it harder to separate from the storm. Emergency temporary protection should be arranged with a roofer. Around St John's, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, especially where trees overhang. It is easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Storm damage roof report starts from £150, including VAT.

What a storm damage roof report looks like in St John's

Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. To find out, check Historic England’s list and ask the council about conservation areas. In either case, a change of roofing material may need consent. Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung walls are typical of Surrey’s older houses. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Winston Churchill School A Specialist Sports College, a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you live in an older home near St John's Church, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself. If you run a business near The Peacocks, a leak can close part of a shop or office, so finding the cause quickly matters.
