Storm damage roof report in Totteridge: what you get
After a storm, safety comes first. Take photos from the ground or from windows, and don’t climb onto the roof. Emergency temporary protection, such as covering an opening, is a job for a roofer. Our report records the damage so you have an independent record to give your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. We survey ridges and hips, slate and tile slopes and gutters and fascias, and common reasons people get in touch are loose or broken chimney pots and cowls and water coming in after the storm.
Chimney stacks on older houses around places like Totteridge can let water in, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp on a chimney breast isn’t always rain from above, which is why it’s worth tracing properly. It is worth looking at the stack from outside and at the timbers beside it in the loft.
Nothing in the report is left vague: if work is needed, the report says so clearly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Questions from Totteridge
Do you cover Totteridge?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
Is my home in Totteridge listed or in a conservation area?
For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Can you put a tarpaulin over the damage?
A roofer should handle temporary protection. Photograph the damage first if you can do so safely. We can record the damage in our report.
How long will you be at the property?
Most surveys take an hour or two for most houses, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. The report follows by email.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only where it’s safe to do so. We check everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the loft space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where it applies. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
Is wear and tear covered by insurance?
Wear and tear is usually excluded from home insurance. Our report records storm damage and any older wear we see, so it is clear what we found. Your insurer decides how its policy applies.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
Surveys run on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Honest limits
Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:
- Areas we can’t see safely
- Estimates of repair costs
- The outcome of a claim
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Flat roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Ridges and hips
- Slate and tile slopes
- Flashings
- Gutters and fascias
How the survey works
Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. A visit to Totteridge is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed in advance. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
- We record fresh damage and older defects.
- You receive the written report with photographs.
Preparing for the visit
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Find any records of previous roof work
- If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

Checking the roof from ground level
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
Do you need a storm damage roof report in Totteridge?
Flat roofs can be damaged too. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. Our report covers flat and pitched roofs.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Damage from fallen branches or debris
- New damp or leaks inside
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Flashings pulled away from walls or stacks
Anyone responsible for a site like Highcrest Academy will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Is there a chance to talk the report through?
- Whether the price includes VAT
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
Storm damage roof reports around Totteridge
Some villages in Buckinghamshire still have thatched roofs. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in. About 1.9 miles north-west lies Hughenden Manor, a reminder of how long the area around Totteridge has been built on. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
If you own a rental within reach of High Wycombe station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused. For an older house near a landmark such as St Andrew's Church, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

Before and after the survey
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:
- Tell your insurer about the damage promptly
- Keep receipts for any emergency work
- Check how your policy defines a storm
- Get a roofer to make the roof safe if needed
Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24 to 48 hours for Standard and the same day for Premium.
A well-maintained roof stands up to storms better. Have loose slates, tiles and flashings seen to promptly.
What happens if roof problems are left?
It helps to get a record soon after the storm, while the damage is fresh. Further storms and quick fixes can make the picture less clear. In an older home around Totteridge, water from a roof defect can get into timber and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.
A Basic Survey starts from £150, including VAT. The Standard Survey starts from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, both including VAT. You will know the price for your roof before booking.
