Storm damage roof report in Terriers: what you get

If your roof has been damaged, stay safe first. Photograph the damage from the ground or a window, and never climb up. If water is coming in, a roofer can put temporary protection in place. We then record the damage in a report you can pass to your insurer. Keep receipts for any emergency work. If you’re worried about new damp or leaks inside and gutters pulled loose in the wind, we can find out what’s behind it.

In older homes around places like Terriers, the underlay may be old bitumen felt, or there may be none at all. Once the slates or tiles let water past, there is little to stop it reaching the ceiling. Finding where it gets in, and whether it’s old wear or new damage, decides what comes next. In the loft, damp battens or wet insulation are frequently the first clues.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

The survey, step by step

The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It usually takes an hour or two at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Parking around Terriers is typically easier than in a town centre, but mention lanes, gates or long drives. On bungalows and lower roofs, much can be seen from ground level, with the loft showing the underside.

  1. We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
  2. Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
  3. The roof is inspected from the ground, windows and the roof where it’s safe.
  4. Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
  5. The report, with photos, is emailed to you.

Before the survey

  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Check pets are kept safely away

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Why it is worth a survey now in Terriers

Knowing whether older wear played a part helps you understand your position. Our report gives an honest view of both, so there are no surprises later. On a bungalow or cottage around Terriers, the roof sits close to the rooms below, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

How the survey changes by roof type

Flat roof coverings

Edge trims and laps are often where flat roof coverings start to peel back. The report notes signs of recent damage and older wear.

Clay and concrete tiles

Tiles can lift, crack or blow off in high winds. We record which are damaged and where.

Common questions in Terriers

Is Terriers in the area you cover?

Yes, Terriers is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Is Terriers within the area you cover?

Yes. Terriers is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We look at the parts we are given access to.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

What this survey can’t tell you

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. It also has these limits:

  • Areas we can’t see safely
  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roofs we survey in Terriers

  • Slate and tile slopes
  • Ridges and hips
  • Flashings
  • Gutters and fascias
  • Flat roofs
  • Chimney stacks

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Terriers?

Storms do not only affect pitched roofs. Wind can lift edges and tear coverings, and blocked outlets can leave water ponding after heavy rain. We record what we find on flat and pitched roofs alike.

Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Roofs hit by falling trees
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Water coming in after the storm

Anyone responsible for a site like The Royal Grammar School will know that a leak through a large roof is frequently found some distance from where the water shows inside.

What to check before booking

  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Which limits apply to the survey
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • Their drone registration, if they fly one

Wind, rain and roofs in Terriers

Hughenden Manor, about 1.1 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Terriers. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Buckinghamshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

Landlords with a home close to High Wycombe station may find that a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. The streets around a church such as Church of Saint Francis are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, the leak may come from a chimney, a valley or tired lead rather than the covering itself.

Terriers is about 1 mile north-east of High Wycombe, in Buckinghamshire.
