About our storm damage roof report in Upminster Bridge
The Financial Ombudsman looks at three things when it considers a storm damage complaint: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. We record what the roof shows about the damage and its likely cause. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. Typical surveys look at flat roof edges peeled back and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, on ridges and hips, chimney stacks and gutters and fascias.
Water getting into a London home often comes from a detail you can’t see from the street: a butterfly roof’s central valley gutter, a parapet gutter, a chimney flashing or a flat roof over a back addition. For a leak or storm damage in Upminster Bridge, those hidden details are where the inspection begins. A hidden gutter that overflows can send water a long way before it shows.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: a seller or estate agent, an insurer, a roofer, a builder or a managing agent.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Upminster Bridge: your questions answered
Can parking be tricky for a visit in Upminster Bridge?
London parking needs a little planning, so let us know about permits, bays or a driveway when you book. That way the visit can be planned around it.
Is Upminster Bridge in the area you cover?
Yes. We survey roofs across London and the South East, and Upminster Bridge is part of that. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and some details.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have completed over 5,000 surveys.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Will my insurer pay out if I get a storm damage report?
That’s not something we can promise. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. Our report gives you an independent record of the damage and its likely cause.
Can I check the roof after a storm?
Please do not climb onto the roof. Take photos from ground level or from windows. Note the date and time, and photograph any damage inside.
Is there a set wind speed for storm damage?
There’s no single figure. Many use gusts of about 55 mph, but each policy sets its own definition. Check your policy wording.
How we price storm damage roof reports
Not every roof costs the same to survey, and it comes down to:
- The size of the roof
- Which survey package you book
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
Prices start from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.
Helping us price your survey
A little information up front helps. It helps to include:
- What kind of property and roof it is
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- What made you get in touch
Not sure which survey you need? It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We will explain the options and the price.
What happens on the day
There isn’t much for you to do on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In Upminster Bridge, visits are available on weekdays and at weekends. London parking is frequently by permit or pay-and-display, so it helps to know what’s near you, and to clear a path to the loft hatch. A back bedroom window can be the best vantage point for a rear addition, so we may ask to use one.
- You tell us what happened and whether a roofer has made the roof safe.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- The report, with photos, is emailed to you.
Before we arrive
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Storm damage roof reports in Upminster Bridge: local notes
Hare Hall, about 2.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Upminster Bridge. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Further from the centre, London’s housing takes in interwar semis with hipped roofs in clay or concrete tiles as well as slate-roofed terraces. If your home in Upminster Bridge is one of them, bay roofs, hips and later dormers each have their own details. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.
If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near The Mercury Mall, a quick answer on where water is coming in keeps a business running. Take an older house close to Church of St Laurence: leaks on older roofs frequently start at lead flashings, valleys or around old chimney stacks.

What we look for on each type of roof
Ridge and hip tiles
Water can get in where ridge tiles have moved. We photograph and describe the damage.
Clay and concrete tiles
A missing tile lets rain reach the underlay. We photograph each gap.
When you need someone else
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes
- Your insurer’s view of the claim
- The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer

Common roof problems in Upminster Bridge
Landlords and managing agents book reports to keep a record for owners and insurers. It helps when explaining damage to a building owner or insurer.
Common reasons to book include:
- Gutters pulled loose in the wind
- Damage from fallen branches or debris
- Loose or torn flashings
- Water coming in after the storm
Living close to St. Andrew's Park is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, and blocked gutters overflow and soak walls.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Whether any drone flown is registered with the CAA
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
