Checking the roof from ground level

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date.

Storm damage roof reports for homes and businesses in Victoria

After a storm, it’s useful to have a clear record of what happened to your roof. Our report shows the damage in photos and says whether it looks like storm damage, wear and tear, or a mix. We are not loss adjusters and can’t tell you if your claim will succeed. What you get is an independent view of the roof’s condition. We survey flat roofs, slate and tile slopes and flashings, and common reasons people get in touch are holes or cracks caused by debris and broken or displaced guttering.

Water getting into a London home frequently comes from a detail you cannot see from the street: a butterfly roof’s central valley gutter, a parapet gutter, a chimney flashing or a flat roof over a back addition. Whether you are tracing a leak or recording storm damage in Victoria, those are among the first places to look. Water from a hidden gutter can run along joists and show up a room or two away.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

For landlords and managing agents

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.

Tips from our surveys

Small things make a difference. Our tips:

  • Record any water damage in rooms and the loft
  • Keep invoices for temporary repairs
  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Write down when the storm hit and when you noticed damage

Once we have been, the findings are written up with photos. It covers the damage, its likely cause and any older defects. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Clear gutters and outlets before the stormy months. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

The survey, step by step

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. In converted houses and mansion blocks, the loft hatch is often on a shared landing. If that applies to your building, it is useful to agree access with the neighbours or the managing agent first. Otherwise, the visit in Victoria runs like any other.

  1. We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
  2. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows and from the loft space where it’s safe.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We check whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. The findings are written up with photos for you to share with your insurer.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • Clear the way to the loft hatch

Why it’s worth a survey now in Victoria

If a roofer needs to make the roof safe, take photos first if you can do so safely from ground level. Those photos show the damage as it was. London’s older roofs often have bitumen felt underlay or none at all, so a slipped slate can soon mean water inside. Left alone, that means wet timbers and plaster, which is a far bigger job than the roof fault itself.

Common questions in Victoria

Will parking be an issue for a roof survey in Victoria?

It rarely stops a survey, but it is worth planning. Let us know the parking rules on your street and we’ll work around them.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Victoria?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

That is not something we can promise. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. What we provide is an independent record of the damage.

How long is the visit?

It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. We’ll confirm the timing when booking.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

Do you work in Victoria?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, Victoria included.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Storm damage roof reports in Victoria: local notes

About 0.4 miles north lies Buckingham Palace, a reminder of how long the area around Victoria has been built on. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. Inner London’s Victorian and Edwardian terraces frequently have Welsh slate roofs. A butterfly roof with a central valley gutter, tucked behind a parapet wall, is common on these houses. In a house like that, shared stacks, party-wall upstands and lead flashings all need looking at as far as they can be seen. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.

For landlords with property near London Victoria station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over. If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Harrods, a quick answer on where water is coming in keeps a business running. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near St. Michael's Church, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in.
