Storm damage roof report in Walthamstow Village: what you get

High winds usually affect the parts of a roof that are already exposed or loose. Slates and tiles slip or blow off, ridge and hip tiles lift, flashings pull away and flat roof coverings can tear. Falling branches can cause damage too. Our report records what has happened to your roof, with photos. Where we also see signs of older wear, the report records that too. Typical surveys look at damaged pots on the stack and flashings pulled away from walls or stacks, on chimney stacks, slate and tile slopes and flat roofs.

In converted houses and blocks across London, water from a roof can run a long way before it shows on a ceiling, sometimes in a different flat from the one below the defect. That makes the source hard to pin down, and finding it matters for whoever has to deal with it. We check what we are given access to in Walthamstow Village, inside and out. It helps to know when the water appears and in what weather.

The report is yours to share with whoever needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and make notes for the report. It normally takes between one and two hours at a house, and longer if the damage is spread across a large roof. In a London area like Walthamstow Village, the main things to sort out are parking and access: let us know about parking, the floor the property is on, any shared entrance and loft access. On the day, the roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from inside the roof space and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We start with the details: when the storm hit and what damage you can see.
  2. We view the roof from wherever it can safely be seen, including the loft where there’s access.
  3. Each area of damage is photographed and described.
  4. We look at whether the damage fits storm damage, older wear or both.
  5. We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.

How to prepare

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property
  • Note where any stains or damp appear

Arrange a survey

Photos help, if you have them. Take them safely from the ground or a window, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Why act early in Walthamstow Village

A few slipped slates can soon lead to wet timbers. Acting quickly usually means less damage overall. Many older London roofs have only old felt under the slates, or no underlay at all, so once the slates or flashings let water past, little stops it reaching ceilings. Left unchecked, water soaks into timber and plaster and the damage spreads.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Walthamstow Village

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, including offices, shops and units. Bigger roofs take more time.

Surveys can also be booked by buyers’ agents acting for a client. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photos included.

Checking the roof from ground level

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, which helps when we look at the roof.

Practical tips

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Keep fallen slates or tiles as evidence if safe
  • Keep a note of the date of the storm
  • Check your policy for how to report damage
  • File receipts for anything you pay for

After the visit, we write up the report with photographs of each area of damage. It sets out what is damaged, the likely cause and any signs of older wear. Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24 to 48 hours and Premium reports the same day.

Keep gutters and outlets clear so heavy rain can drain away. Blocked drainage can add water damage to wind damage.

Storm damage roof reports around Walthamstow Village

About 2.9 miles west lies Bruce Castle, a reminder of how long the area around Walthamstow Village has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Alongside Victorian and Edwardian terraces, outer London has a great many interwar semis, frequently with hipped roofs of clay or concrete tiles. On a semi of that age, the small roofs over the bays, the hip tiles and any later dormer each need their own look. Knowing the roof type helps narrow down where water may be getting in.

Take an older house close to St. Mary's Church: water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney. If you live near a park such as Lloyd Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys.

FAQs for Walthamstow Village

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Walthamstow Village?

We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Is Walthamstow Village in the area you cover?

Yes, Walthamstow Village is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Walthamstow Village as anywhere else.

How experienced are you?

We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and South East England.

I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Mention it when you get in touch and we’ll explain what’s needed.

Can you survey at the weekend?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you as you book.

Can I challenge a declined storm claim?

The first step is a complaint to your insurer. If you’re still unhappy, you may be able to take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service. An independent report can add to your evidence, but we cannot say how it will turn out.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Yes, where it is applicable. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and every flight depends on the airspace and the weather.

Do you need a storm damage roof report in Walthamstow Village?

Some people book because a claim has been questioned. You get an independent record of what the roof shows. We cannot say whether the decision will change.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Holes or cracks caused by debris
  • Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
  • Lifted or missing ridge and hip tiles
  • Loose or broken chimney pots and cowls

If you let a flat or house near Walthamstow Central station, a clear finding on where water gets in helps you brief a roofer straight away.
