Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Ashton
A thermal survey isn’t a quick fix for every roof problem. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. That’s why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding can’t be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. If you’ve noticed areas of a flat roof that may hold water and patches of heat loss across the roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Ashton are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
The report records the roof as we found it on the day. That makes it useful now and a handy reference later.

What this survey can’t tell you
No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Bear these in mind:
- The condition of timbers we cannot see
- An energy rating for the building
- Proving moisture from the images alone

What we check
- Ceilings below the roof
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
The survey, step by step
On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that is worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, from the ground, from windows, in the roof space and by drone where applicable. The survey typically takes about one to two hours at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere like Ashton needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.
- We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
Getting ready for the survey
- Leave side gates unlocked
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with the freeholder or managing agent
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
Getting a price
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window, and please do not climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

What you can safely check yourself
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Why act early in Ashton
Without thermal imaging, the only way to see how far water has spread is frequently to open up the roof. It helps when deciding whether to patch an area or replace the roof. In a small place like Ashton, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we’ll tell you which fits.

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Ashton
Will you come out to Ashton?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Do you cover Ashton?
Yes, Ashton is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
Is this an asbestos survey?
No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, like cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and we can provide details if a managing agent needs them.
Will the camera show exactly where the water is?
No, not on its own. It shows temperature, and wet materials often behave differently from dry ones. That is why we check any patterns with moisture readings.
Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?
On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. Our report is clear about what can be read from them, and we check them with a visual inspection and moisture readings.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Only where it is safe to do so. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from the ground, from windows and vantage points, from the roof space, from the roof itself where safe and by drone where applicable. Anything we cannot see is noted in the report.
What else we do in Ashton
Airspace, weather and Ashton roofs
Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. Your council and Historic England’s list will tell you where you stand. Where the drone is part of the survey, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Peter, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. Take a building like Bishops Waltham Infant School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Different roofs, different checks
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Problems where roof slopes and walls meet are often hidden. A careful visual inspection goes alongside the images.
Loft insulation
From inside the loft, thermal imaging can show gaps in insulation and cold spots. We inspect the loft where it can be reached safely.
