About our thermal roof survey in Ashwell

Thermal imaging is part of our Premium Survey, which starts from £400. You also get a drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and a report on the same day. There is an in-person consultation as well, plus a follow-up 12 months later. You can ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and a note of what you’ve noticed. For big commercial roofs, we quote on size and access. We survey pitched roof slopes, commercial roofs and ceilings below the roof, and common reasons people get in touch are cold areas below the roof and possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering.

In smaller places like Ashwell, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from the ground. The parts you can’t see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. The forecast decides the day. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from the ground.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters. You will see the good as well as the bad.

Drones, thermal imaging and Ashwell roofs

If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.

Anyone responsible for a site like Ashwell Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. If your house is among the older ones in the streets near St Mary's Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Ashwell

Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. The camera helps narrow the search.

People usually book a survey after spotting one of these:

  • Wet insulation beneath the membrane
  • Damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys
  • Damp that repairs haven’t cured
  • Ceilings that feel colder in places

Hinxworth Place lies about 1.8 miles west, so building around Ashwell goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • What follow-up you get after the report
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one

What a roof survey includes

Can I check my roof myself?

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.

It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

Tips from our surveys

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks
  • Keep outlets and gutters clear to stop water sitting
  • Ask us about the forecast if rain is expected

Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.

Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover

A survey is a proper look at the roof, but it cannot do everything. The main limits are:

  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • The condition of timbers we can’t see

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Flat roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Commercial roofs
  • Pitched roof slopes
  • Loft conversions

Why it’s worth a survey now in Ashwell

Once insulation under a membrane is wet, it tends to stay wet. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. Around Ashwell, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, especially where trees overhang. Dealing with the cause is simple; drying out a wall is not.

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

What you get with us

  • Professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • Prices that include VAT
  • An independent view of the roof
  • Surveys seven days a week

The survey, step by step

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes about one to two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. If you have questions on the day, just ask. With a bit of garden around a house, as there often is around Ashwell, the roof can be viewed from several angles. Let us know if any side is fenced off or hard to reach. Inside, the loft is looked at where it can be reached safely.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Before we arrive

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Questions from Ashwell

Do you cover smaller places like Ashwell?

Yes. Ashwell is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.

Do you cover Ashwell?

Yes. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and Ashwell is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or email us and let us know about the property.

What will the report tell me?

A report with photographs, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, with the most urgent first where relevant. The Standard Survey adds moisture detection and a structural check, and the Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

What do I do with the report?

The report arrives by email. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.

Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?

Gaps and thin areas of insulation can show up on the camera. The difference is clearest when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Where we can reach the loft safely, we check there too.

Does thermal imaging work on slate and tile roofs?

On pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp patterns. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We do not carry out asbestos surveys or testing. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings and suggest a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before any work.
