Thermal roof survey in Compton
A thermal imaging roof survey uses a thermal camera to show differences in surface temperature across a roof. Those patterns can point to trapped moisture, missing insulation or heat escaping. It is important to know that the camera shows temperature, not water, so we check what it shows with moisture readings. Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. Conditions on the day affect the results, and the report explains how. We survey ceilings below the roof, insulated roof spaces and pitched roof slopes, and the problems we are asked to look at most are leaks that are hard to trace and areas of a flat roof that may hold water.
Some older homes in villages like Compton are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager does not touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

FAQs for Compton
Will you come out to Compton?
We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Is Compton in the area you cover?
Yes, Compton is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos.
What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?
It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, and we check them with moisture readings.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. The report includes photos of what we found.
Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?
It can be useful, though pitched roofs are typically harder to read. The air space under slates and tiles can hide patterns, so we combine it with an inspection from the loft where there is safe access.
Is thermal imaging good for finding leaks?
It often helps show where to look. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. It is used alongside a close inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone can’t prove a leak.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
What this survey cannot tell you
No survey can tell you everything, and it is better to know them up front. Bear these in mind:
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Readings unaffected by sun, shade or reflections
- Structural calculations, which need a structural engineer
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.

How it works
We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, plus time to check any thermal findings with moisture readings. Older rural homes like those around Compton can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
- We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
- We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
- Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
- You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.
Before the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

What a survey costs
Several things affect the price of a survey:
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- House, block, shop or office
- The size of the roof
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.
Helping us price your survey
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, tell us:
- Where water is showing inside, if it is
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
- Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window
- What made you get in touch
We confirm the price for your survey before booking, so you know where you stand. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. For a price for your roof, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
What we look for on each type of roof
Loft insulation
Loft insulation is easily disturbed when people store things or run cables. The camera can show where it no longer covers the ceiling.
GRP fibreglass roofs
Glossy GRP can reflect heat. We allow for reflections and confirm findings with moisture readings.
Leave it or get it looked at?
For buyers, a thermal survey adds detail that a visual inspection can’t give. Finding hidden moisture before exchange gives you facts to raise with the seller. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Compton, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where it applies, from £400 inc. VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Compton?
Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Missing or slipped insulation can stand out as temperature differences, particularly when it is warm inside and cold outside.
Problems we come across often include:
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
- Wet insulation beneath the membrane
For an older house near a landmark such as St Marys Parish Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- What the survey will not cover
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
- What happens after the report arrives
Thermal roof surveys in Compton: local notes
If your survey includes the drone, the flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Historic houses like Farnham Castle, about 1.8 miles west, show how far back building in the area around Compton goes. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.
Anyone responsible for a site like South Farnham School will know that big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once.
