Thermal imaging roof survey in Crabtree, West Sussex
Thermal imaging to find moisture and heat loss patterns in a roof in Crabtree, with drones and thermal imaging where they help. Get in touch for a price.
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Areas of a flat roof that may hold water
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
Practical tips
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Keep the heating on as usual before a heat loss survey
- Use the report as a baseline for later checks
- Tell us where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
- Keep dated photos of any marks on ceilings
Many people send the report to roofers, who can then quote for the areas shown. Because the images are paired with photos, it’s easy to find each area on the roof.
Clear outlets and gutters regularly, so water does not sit on the roof. The less water sits, the less can find its way beneath.
Thermal roof survey in Crabtree
Thermal imaging is useful when a damp patch has no clear cause. Leaks often run along a roof before they appear on a ceiling, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. If you’re worried about heat escaping through the roof and water getting in at parapets and stacks, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Crabtree are listed or in a conservation area. A look from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Honest limits
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Keep these in mind:
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
- A structural engineer’s assessment
- Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture

Roof types and parts we check
- Ceilings below the roof
- Flat roofs
- Pitched roof slopes
- Commercial roofs
- Insulated roof spaces
- Loft conversions
The survey, step by step
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. The visit typically takes an hour or two at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere as small as Crabtree, access is frequently the only tricky part. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.
- You tell us about the roof and any damp, leaks or cold rooms.
- We check the conditions and note how they may affect the images.
- We inspect the roof and take thermal images during the same visit.
- We back up the thermal patterns with moisture readings.
- The Premium report reaches you the same day, and we go through it with you in person.
Getting ready for the survey
- Let us know about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Drones, thermal imaging and Crabtree roofs
If your survey includes the drone, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old Sussex buildings. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.
Tyes Place lies about 4.3 miles north-east, so building around Crabtree goes back a long way. A drone or thermal survey does not involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Old Church House the Glebe, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Questions from Crabtree
Is Crabtree in the area you cover?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is Crabtree within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.
Do I need to be at home?
That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access; we’ll agree the details as you book.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Where it is applicable and safe, yes. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID), flying a sub-250g drone. It is included in the Drone Roof Survey and, where it applies, the Premium Survey.
Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?
Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. Our report notes the conditions and how they affected the findings.
Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?
Thermal imaging is included in our Premium Survey, from £400. That also includes a full inspection, a drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and a same-day report.
Common roof problems in Crabtree
Not every roof problem shows on the surface. Trapped moisture, missing insulation and hidden heat loss are three examples. Thermal imaging gives us another way to look for them.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Leaks that are hard to trace
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
If you look after a building like Newells Preparatory School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Questions to ask before you book
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
Rented homes, blocks and businesses

Letting agents frequently book on a landlord’s behalf. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.
DIY checks: what’s safe
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.
