Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Slaugham

Is my home in Slaugham listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Is Slaugham within the area you cover?

Yes. Slaugham is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

Does someone need to be in?

Not necessarily. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.

Will thermal imaging find my leak?

It often helps show where to look. Patterns can suggest where trapped water has spread. We combine it with a visual inspection and moisture readings, as the camera alone cannot prove a leak.

What happens next?

You will get the report by email, with photographs and clear recommendations. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey an in-person consultation.

Will the survey show heat loss through my roof?

Thermal images can suggest where heat is escaping and where insulation may be missing. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations, but the images show where improvements may help.

What does a thermal roof survey show?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, which we then check with moisture readings.

How a thermal roof survey works in Slaugham

A thermal survey isn’t a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. We back up the images with moisture readings and a careful look at the roof. The report is clear about what the images show and what they don’t. If a finding can’t be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. We’re frequently asked to look into moisture around outlets and upstands and thin or uneven insulation in the roof, on ceilings below the roof, commercial roofs and pitched roof slopes.

Older buildings in small places like Slaugham may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Where we can’t see part of the roof, the report says so. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Why get it checked now?

The longer moisture sits in a roof, the more it can affect timbers and finishes below. Looking now, while the damage may still be limited, keeps more options open. In a small place like Slaugham, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.

Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Heat the home normally on the days before
  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks
  • Move stored items away from the loft hatch

After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. Each image is explained in plain words, with our recommendations. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.

Make sure loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.

What a survey costs

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • Height and safe access
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • Roof area
  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. The price for your roof depends on its size, access and what you need to know.

Getting in touch

We will normally ask about:

  • Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • Your timetable, such as an exchange date

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.

Roof by roof

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We combine a visual check of cracks with the thermal images around them.

Felt and asphalt flat roofs

On felt and asphalt flat roofs, wet insulation can show as a temperature difference across the surface. We check those patches with moisture readings.

What we do, step by step

We photograph the roof as we go, so the report shows exactly what we saw. Close-ups come from the safest viewpoint available, including by drone where it is applicable and the weather allows. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Somewhere like Slaugham needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can safely be seen.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photos and our recommendations.

Getting ready for the survey

  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Have keys ready for side gates, garages or roof access doors
  • Make sure the loft hatch can be reached

Book a survey

If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Take them safely from ground level or a window; never climb up to get a better view. To get started, ring 07833 053749 or email us.

Advice

DIY checks: what’s safe

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Thermal roof surveys around Slaugham

Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying. In Sussex, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, frequently with tile-hanging on the walls below. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

For an older house near a landmark such as St Mary's Church, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. Historic houses such as Tyes Place, about 1.8 miles east, show how far back building around Slaugham goes. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Warninglid Primary School, big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.
