How a thermal roof survey works in East Stourmouth

On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. So a wet patch can show as a warmer or cooler area on the camera. It helps us see how far water may have spread under the covering, which is hard to judge by eye. We then check those areas with moisture readings. Common reasons to book are damp around chimneys and parapets and moisture around outlets and upstands, across flat roofs, pitched roof slopes and loft conversions.

Some older homes in villages like East Stourmouth are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

Common questions in East Stourmouth

Do you cover smaller places like East Stourmouth?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

How do I find out if my home in East Stourmouth is listed?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Can a thermal survey trace a roof leak?

It’s a useful tool for tracing leaks, but not the only one. The results depend on conditions on the day. If the source can’t be confirmed, we’ll say what could help next, like electronic leak detection.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

The camera does not see water itself. Wet insulation holds heat longer than dry, so it can stand out, but we check each finding with moisture readings.

How soon will I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email.

Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?

Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.

Will I get photos?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

Why act early in East Stourmouth

Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding them early can mean a smaller job. Older cottages and farmhouses around East Stourmouth can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it is left.

Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, including VAT. We can help you choose the package that fits what you want to find out.

Tips that help

From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:

  • Check from ground level or a window, never by climbing
  • Talk to us about the weather when booking
  • Let us know where and when you’ve seen damp or stains
  • Use the report as a baseline for later checks

After the visit, we put the thermal images, photographs and moisture readings into one report. Each image is explained in plain words, with our recommendations. With a Premium Survey, you get the report the same day.

Check loft insulation covers the whole area and hasn’t been disturbed. Gaps often appear after work in the loft.

When you need someone else

Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:

  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
  • A formal energy assessment

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will tell you before you book. What our survey covers.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in East Stourmouth

Cold rooms under a roof, or high heating bills, lead some people to ask about heat loss. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, particularly when there is a clear difference between inside and outside.

These are some of the problems a survey can pick up:

  • Stains that keep coming back
  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Leaks far from where the stain appears
  • Wet insulation beneath the membrane

For an older house near a landmark such as All Saints Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Before booking anyone

  • Are they insured for the work?
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • What experience they bring

What a roof survey includes

Drones, thermal imaging and East Stourmouth roofs

East Stourmouth is within about 5 miles of the coast, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. You will also find oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses among the county’s older buildings. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.

Quex Park lies about 4.7 miles north-east, so building around East Stourmouth goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

East Stourmouth is about 6 miles south-east of Herne Bay, in Kent. We survey roofs in East Stourmouth and the surrounding area as part of our work across London and the South East. How the survey works

Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, inspect the roof from each safe vantage point, photograph what we find and make notes for the report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere like East Stourmouth needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
  2. We check the roof from ground level, from windows and from the roof itself where it’s safe.
  3. Thermal images are taken to show differences in surface temperature.
  4. Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
  5. You get a report with thermal images, photographs and our recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at

Checking the roof from the ground

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in.
