Thermal roof survey in Sarre: what you get
A thermal survey is not a quick fix for every roof problem. Sun, shade, reflective surfaces and wind can all change what the camera shows. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. Where something cannot be confirmed, we say what would help next. Typical surveys look at heat escaping through the roof and gaps in loft insulation, across commercial roofs, ceilings below the roof and pitched roof slopes.
Somewhere as small as Sarre, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it’s clear what was covered and what wasn’t.

Common questions in Sarre
Is my home in Sarre listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Is Sarre in the area you cover?
Yes, Sarre is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Sarre as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?
The camera does not see water itself. Because wet insulation holds heat for longer, it can show as a different temperature, and moisture readings are used to check it.
How does a thermal imaging roof survey work?
A thermal camera shows differences in surface temperature. The patterns can suggest wet insulation, gaps in insulation or heat escaping. Findings are checked with moisture readings.
What do I do with the report?
The report arrives by email. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
What’s in the report?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos, finishing with recommendations. The most urgent items are made clear.
What you can safely check yourself
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
Drones, thermal imaging and Sarre roofs
Sarre lies within about 3 miles of the sea, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. The county’s older buildings also include oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
Anyone responsible for a site like St Nicholas At Wade Church of England Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. For an older house near a landmark such as Church of Saint Nicholas, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. Quex Park, about 4.1 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Sarre. A drone or thermal survey doesn’t involve any work on the roof, which suits older buildings.
Sarre is about 5 miles south-east of Herne Bay, in Kent. In Sarre, as across Kent, every roof gets the same careful survey. Across Kent, we cover Sarre and the places around it. We also survey roofs in Canterbury.

What a survey costs
We confirm the price for the job before you book. This is what makes a difference:
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package matters as well. We’ll give you the figure before anything is booked.
Helping us price your survey
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to tell us:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Anything about access we should know
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work

How it works
Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes about 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. Around Sarre, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so tell us about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- We look over the roof from wherever it is safe.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there is safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- Each image is set beside a normal photo and explained in the report.
Getting ready for the survey
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
How to book
If you are buying, it’s useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email whenever suits you.
Advice
Other services in Sarre
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. The report is emailed, so it can go straight to your client, photographs included.
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, from shops and offices to industrial units. Bigger roofs take more time, so they’re priced to suit.
What we look for on each type of roof
Parapets, valleys and junctions
Water often gets in where roofs meet walls, parapets or valley gutters. The camera can help show damp around these junctions.
Pitched slate and tile roofs
Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. We explain what can and cannot be read from them.
When you need someone else
To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:
- Hidden layers that need to be opened up to check
- Confirming water without moisture readings
- A formal energy assessment
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. The full list of what we check.
