Thermal roof survey in Monkton: what you get

Thermal imaging is useful when a damp patch has no clear cause. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and temperature patterns can help us trace where it may have come from. We combine the images with a visual inspection and moisture readings, so no conclusion rests on one method alone. We survey insulated roof spaces, commercial roofs and loft conversions, and the problems we are asked to look at most are areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and missing or slipped insulation.

Older buildings in small places like Monkton may be listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it is a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

The report is written in plain words, so you don’t need to be a roofer to follow it. Each point is backed by a photograph where possible, with the urgent items made clear.

What affects the price in Monkton

To price your survey, we look at:

  • How big the roof is
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.

Helping us price your survey

Getting the details right at the start saves time. It helps to include:

  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Access details, such as a loft hatch or a shared roof
  • Your timetable, like an exchange date
  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them

Getting a price is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and give us some details about the property and we’ll explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

Why get it checked now?

If a big flat roof may need replacing, knowing the wet areas first is useful. Thermal imaging, checked with moisture readings, gives a clearer picture before you spend. For older village homes like those around Monkton, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.

Every price we give includes VAT. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. You will know the price for the job before booking.

Why us?

  • An independent look at the roof
  • Photographs and a written report every time
  • Thermal imaging and drone inspection where they help
  • We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

Airspace, weather and Monkton roofs

The coast is about 4 miles or less from Monkton, and wind off the sea can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Many older homes in Kent have handmade clay tiles, including Kent peg tiles held by pegs through two holes, and tile-hanging on their upper walls. Oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of the county’s older buildings too. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.

Quex Park lies about 2.6 miles north-east, so building around Monkton goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. Take an older house close to Church of Saint Mary Magdalene: thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image. For site and facilities teams at buildings like Monkton Church of England Primary School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Monkton is about 5 miles south-west of Margate, in Kent. Whether the building in Monkton is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, we can survey the roof. Across Kent, we cover Monkton. You can also see our page for Canterbury.

Monkton: your questions answered

Is Monkton in the area you cover?

We do. The survey and report are the same in Monkton as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Will you come out to Monkton?

We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.

What will the report tell me?

Written findings with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.

Can you do a thermal survey in any weather?

Conditions on the day have a big effect on what the camera can show. Dry, calm weather after some sun gives the best chance of clear images. We record the conditions in the report, so you know how much weight to give the images.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance, for every survey we carry out.

Will the camera show exactly where the water is?

Not directly. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. That’s why we check any patterns with moisture readings.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys can be booked for any day of the week: Monday to Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Just tell us the days that suit you.

The survey, step by step

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we look at everything we can see safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. The survey usually takes about one to two hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere like Monkton needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
  3. A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
  4. Any patterns of interest are checked with moisture readings where we can reach them.
  5. The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Different roofs, different checks

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Slate and tile roofs are often harder to read with a thermal camera, because of the air space beneath. We combine the images with an inspection from the loft where there’s safe access.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water under a GRP roof can reach the timber deck. Thermal imaging can suggest where that may be happening.

For landlords and managing agents

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.

What this survey cannot tell you

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, and that sets some limits:

  • Whether the deck or roof structure is strong enough
  • The condition of timbers we cannot see
  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations

If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
