Flying and imaging in Ellingham

A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, before anyone quotes for re-roofing.

The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary and All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Thermal roof survey in Ellingham

Thermal imaging is useful when a damp patch has no clear cause. Water can travel some distance under a roof covering before it shows inside, and the camera can show patterns that help us follow it. The images are used alongside a visual inspection and moisture readings, so the findings don’t rely on the camera alone. We survey commercial roofs, insulated roof spaces and flat roofs, and people most often book us about cold areas below the roof and heat escaping through the roof.

Somewhere as small as Ellingham, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you cannot get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

How the survey changes by roof type

Pitched slate and tile roofs

Even on pitched roofs, the camera can point to heat loss and some damp. We explain what can and cannot be read from them.

GRP fibreglass roofs

Water can get through cracked GRP into the deck. We look at cracks by eye and use the images to see whether there is a pattern around them.

DIY checks: what’s safe

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That part is for a survey.

You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

For a freeholder or residents’ company, a roof report is a sound basis for a maintenance plan, with the most urgent items set out first.

Where a roof is shared: access has to be agreed with whoever owns or manages the building. Let us know about it when booking and we’ll plan the survey around it.

Do you need a thermal roof survey in Ellingham?

Unexplained damp is one of the main reasons people ask for thermal imaging. Water can travel under a roof covering or along timbers before it shows inside. The camera helps narrow the search.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Moisture around outlets and upstands
  • Gaps in loft insulation
  • Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
  • Water that travels before it shows

Anyone responsible for a site like Ringwood School Academy will know that big roofs are where close-up aerial shots and thermal images show the most at once.

Questions to ask before you book

  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Whether you get a written report with photos
  • What’s outside the scope of the survey
  • What happens after the report arrives

What a good roof survey covers

Ellingham: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Ellingham?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Is Ellingham in the area you cover?

Yes, Ellingham is within the area we cover. We work right across London and the South East. You can phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address and a few details.

Are you structural engineers?

No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

How soon will I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. All of them come by email, ready to forward.

Does someone need to be in?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the roof space, someone has to give us access; we’ll agree the details when booking.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. The report may flag materials that could contain asbestos on buildings built or refurbished before 2000.

Does thermal imaging detect leaks directly?

No, not on its own. It shows surface temperature, and wet areas can show up because they hold heat differently. We confirm what it suggests with moisture readings.

What affects the price in Ellingham

A few things affect what a survey costs:

  • Whether thermal imaging or a drone is needed
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

To find out what your survey will cost, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and a few details. The price is agreed before a date is set.

What we need to know

The more you tell us, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, let us know:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them

If you’re buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form when you’re ready.

What happens on the day

We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes about one to two hours at a typical home, and more on a big or complicated roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Ellingham frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We go through the roof, the problem and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We look over the roof from wherever it’s safe.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof and of the loft where we can reach it.
  4. We take moisture readings where the images suggest a problem.
  5. The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.

Preparing for the visit

  • If it is not your property yet, arrange access through the agent
  • Find any records of previous roof work
  • Keep pets in another room
