Foreland Fields Thermal Roof Survey
Not sure what state the roof is in? We carry out thermal roof surveys in Foreland Fields and across the Isle of Wight, with plain-English findings.
- Patches of heat loss across the roof
- Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
- Damp that repairs haven’t cured
Checking the roof from the ground
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Overflowing water can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery. That is where a survey comes in.
Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Foreland Fields
On a flat roof, wet insulation holds heat longer than dry insulation. That means a wet area can show up as a different temperature from the rest of the roof. This can give an idea of how far water has travelled beneath the membrane, which is hard to judge by eye. We then check those areas with moisture readings. Common reasons to book are leaks far from where the stain appears and damp where roofs meet walls and chimneys, across loft conversions, commercial roofs and ceilings below the roof.
Somewhere as small as Foreland Fields, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
If any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. You will know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Practical tips
Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. Our suggestions:
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Make sure the loft can be reached safely
- File the images with your roof records
- Check outlets after heavy rain
You also get an in-person consultation with a Premium Survey, so you can go through the images with us. There is a 12-month follow-up too.
Keep outlets and gutters clear so water drains off the roof quickly. Less standing water means less chance of it getting under the covering.
What we are asked to look at in Foreland Fields
Some owners book because the rooms under the roof feel cold. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated roof areas can show up on the camera, particularly when there’s a clear difference between inside and outside.
Typical things we are asked to look at include:
- Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
- Water getting in at parapets and stacks
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
- Damp around roof outlets and upstands
If your house is among the older ones in the streets near Saint Luke, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
Questions to ask before you book
- Their insurance cover
- Will the report include photos?
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- How soon the report will arrive
What happens on the day
Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. The survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Foreland Fields can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start by discussing the roof, any signs of damp and how the weather may affect the images.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe viewpoints.
- A thermal camera records how the surface temperature varies across the roof.
- We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there is safe access.
- We write up the thermal images alongside ordinary photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Foreland Fields
Is drone flying allowed in Foreland Fields?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Bembridge Airport is about 2 miles away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Foreland Fields?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Can you check my loft insulation with a thermal camera?
The camera can point to heat loss and gaps in insulation. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations, but the images show where improvements may help.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Will thermal imaging find my leak?
Thermal imaging can help, alongside other checks. What it shows depends on the weather and the roof. Where it can’t be pinned down, the report suggests a next step, such as electronic leak detection.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. Where an engineer is needed, we say so in the report.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Let us know about it when you book and we will plan the survey around it.
What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
Every roof is different, so prices are confirmed before booking. This is what makes a difference:
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- How big the roof is
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
Every price we give includes VAT. Prices start from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.
Getting in touch
There is no need for technical words. It is enough to tell us:
- Anything about access we should know
- What’s prompted the survey
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- The address and postcode of the property
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
Flying and imaging in Foreland Fields
Foreland Fields lies within about 1 mile of the sea, and coastal wind can be strong. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof surface and little wind, so the date is chosen with the forecast in mind. Some villages on the Isle of Wight still have thatched roofs, and sea air and wind reach every part of the island. Many roofs like these can’t be judged properly from the pavement, and that’s where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
Anyone responsible for a site like Bembridge Church of England Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. With Yaverland Manor about 2.6 miles west, the area around Foreland Fields has a long history. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof itself.
