Thermal roof surveys near Hillway

How a thermal roof survey works in Hillway

A thermal survey isn’t a quick fix for every roof problem. It shows surface temperature, and things like sun, shade, reflections and wind all affect the readings. That is why we check findings with moisture readings and a close visual inspection. Our report says plainly what the camera picked up and how sure we can be. If a finding can’t be confirmed, the report suggests a next step. We survey commercial roofs, pitched roof slopes and flat roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are cold spots on ceilings under the roof and leaks far from where the stain appears.

In a small place like Hillway, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Hillway

Once a leak has been fixed, people frequently ask whether the roof is still wet. Thermal images and moisture readings can suggest whether moisture is still trapped, given suitable conditions on the day.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Cold areas below the roof
  • Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
  • Damp around chimneys and parapets
  • Missing or slipped insulation

Anyone responsible for a site like Bembridge Church of England Primary School will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • What the survey won’t cover
  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • Their insurance cover

What a roof survey includes

Airspace, weather and Hillway roofs

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Hillway, and coastal wind can be strong. Calm, dry conditions after a sunny day suit thermal imaging best, so the visit is planned around the forecast. The wider area around Hillway has a long history of building, with Yaverland Manor about 1.6 miles west. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you live in an older home near Bembridge Methodist Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof frequently shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Hillway is about 4 miles south-east of Ryde, in the Isle of Wight. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Hillway can all book thermal roof surveys. Across the Isle of Wight, we cover Hillway. For surveys nearby, see our Portsmouth page.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

What affects the price in Hillway

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • How big the roof is
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

What to tell us when you contact us

Here’s what helps us most when you contact us:

  • Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Unsure which package suits your roof? The easiest way is to ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and describe the roof and why you want it surveyed. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Wet insulation under a flat roof does not dry out on its own while the covering stays on. In time, it stops insulating properly and can damage the deck. Finding the wet areas sooner keeps the work smaller. Outbuildings and barns around Hillway are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Every price we give includes VAT. Thermal roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before you book.

Honest limits

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • A structural engineer’s assessment
  • Seeing water directly, as the camera shows temperature, not moisture
  • A formal energy assessment

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll suggest the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Loft conversions
  • Flat roofs
  • Insulated roof spaces
  • Commercial roofs
  • Ceilings below the roof
  • Pitched roof slopes

How the survey works

We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. Inside, we look for staining, damp, gaps and signs of movement. All in, the survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Somewhere like Hillway needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We talk through the roof, any damp or leaks, and the weather expected on the day.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
  4. Areas that look unusual on the camera are checked with moisture readings where possible.
  5. The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

Before the survey

  • Clear the way to the loft hatch
  • For flats, check roof access has been agreed
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at

Questions from Hillway

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Hillway?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Hillway?

The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Bembridge Airport is about 1 mile away, so we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before any flight. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying, though the rest of the survey goes ahead either way.

Which days do you carry out surveys?

Surveys run on any day of the week. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.

What can thermal imaging tell me about my roof?

It records surface temperature across the roof. Unusual patterns can point to trapped water, gaps in insulation or heat escaping, which we then check with moisture readings.

What’s the best way to book?

The quickest way is to call 07833 053749 or drop us an email. Let us know the address and a little about the roof. We survey seven days a week.

Is thermal imaging included in your surveys?

It’s part of the Premium Survey, from £400. An in-person consultation and a follow-up 12 months later are included too. For bigger commercial roofs, we quote on size.

Does the report include photographs?

Yes, plenty. Each finding is shown in a picture where possible, which makes the report easy to follow.
