Chimney survey in Foreland Fields
A chimney stands up above the roof, exposed to wind, rain and frost on every side. In time, flaunching cracks, mortar washes out and flashings come loose. Water then gets into the stack and can show as damp on a chimney breast or a stain in the loft. A survey finds these problems and records them with photographs. If you’re worried about gaps in the mortar around the pots and staining on walls around the chimney, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
In a small place like Foreland Fields, many roofs stand in the open, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are often where weather gets in first.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent.

FAQs for Foreland Fields
Do you cover smaller places like Foreland Fields?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Does being near the coast affect roofs in Foreland Fields?
Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
Should I worry about a leaning stack?
It is worth having a leaning stack checked. Our survey notes how it looks and the condition of the bricks and joints, and recommend a structural engineer where it may be a structural concern.
How much is a survey?
Chimney survey starts from £150, including VAT. You will know the price for your survey before booking, and it depends on the roof’s size, access and the package you choose. To get a price, ring 07833 053749 or email us.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
What should I do with a chimney I do not use?
It depends on its condition and your plans. We record how the stack is doing and whether it is capped with ventilation. If you’re thinking of removing it, check with the council first in a conservation area or on a listed building.
What insurance do you have?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Prices for chimney surveys in Foreland Fields
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:
- Whether it is a home or a commercial building
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- Roof area
- Building height and the viewpoints available
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, access and the package you choose.

What happens if roof problems are left?
A small amount of repointing or new flaunching is normally a modest job. Leave it, and frost can work the stack loose, and the work grows. Older and listed buildings around Foreland Fields may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. Size, height and access can affect the price too.

DIY checks: what’s safe
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

The survey, step by step
The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the loft space if there’s safe access. Lead flashings
Mortar fillets are sometimes used where lead would typically be. They crack with age, and we check them too.
