Airspace, weather and Foxcotte roofs
If your home is older, it is worth knowing whether it’s listed or in a conservation area before planning roof work. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, and councils can also use Article 4 directions to control changes in conservation areas. A number of Hampshire villages keep thatched roofs on their older buildings. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
For an older house near a landmark such as St Thomas, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.
Foxcotte is about 2 miles north-west of Andover, in Hampshire. From houses to flats and shops in Foxcotte, the roof can be surveyed. Foxcotte is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire where we work. There is also a page for Southampton.

Thermal roof survey in Foxcotte: what you get
Your report sets out the thermal images alongside ordinary photos, so it is easy to see which part of the roof each one shows. We explain what each pattern may mean, what the moisture readings found and what we recommend. With a Premium Survey, the report reaches you the same day. If you have questions, the in-person consultation gives you time to go through them. There is a 12-month follow-up as well. We survey ceilings below the roof, commercial roofs and loft conversions, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are moisture around outlets and upstands and water getting in at parapets and stacks.
In a village or hamlet like Foxcotte, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from the ground. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned in advance. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
The report works through the roof section by section, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

What affects the cost of thermal roof surveys
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- Roof area
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. The price is always agreed first.
Helping us price your survey
These details help when you contact us:
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
- Anything about access we should know
- The kind of building and roof involved
When you’re ready to go ahead, call 07833 053749 or send us an email. From there it’s a case of choosing a package, agreeing the price and fixing a day.
Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:
- Do not switch the heating off before the visit
- Note where damp appears and after what weather
- Keep the report to compare against after any repair
- Take photos of stains as they appear, so we can compare
After the visit, we put the thermal images, photos and moisture readings into one report. Each image is explained in plain words, with our recommendations. Premium reports are sent the same day.
Have small defects in the covering fixed early. Once water gets under a membrane, it can travel far before it appears inside.
What this survey can’t tell you
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- A formal energy assessment
- Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor
- What’s inside walls or under coverings, without opening up
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. What our survey covers.
What this survey covers
- Pitched roof slopes
- Flat roofs
- Ceilings below the roof
- Loft conversions
- Insulated roof spaces
- Commercial roofs
When to book a survey in Foxcotte
Flat roofs that have leaked for a while can have wet insulation under the covering. Owners want to know how far it has spread before deciding what to do. Thermal images and moisture readings together can show the likely extent.
Here are some of the things we see frequently:
- Damp around chimneys and parapets
- Thin or uneven insulation in the roof
- Wet areas near outlets and upstands
- Areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions
If you look after a building such as Harrow Way Community School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
- Which limits apply to the survey
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
- Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
Checking the roof from ground level
During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
Your questions about thermal roof surveys in Foxcotte
Is my home in Foxcotte listed or in a conservation area?
Start with Historic England’s list for listing and your council for conservation areas. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Will you come out to Foxcotte?
Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
What happens after the survey?
The report arrives by email. With Standard there is a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you’ll need a RICS survey as well.
Do you use drones?
Yes, where it’s applicable. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, including flight restriction zones near airports. We are a CAA-registered drone operator.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We point out what can be seen, like sagging or deflection, but we don’t carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
How it works
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a report with photos. As for time on site, it usually takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Foxcotte often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- First we discuss the roof, any damp and the forecast for the visit.
- The roof is inspected visually from safe positions.
- Thermal images are taken across the roof and, where there’s safe access, in the loft.
- Patterns that stand out are checked with moisture readings.
- The report pairs each thermal image with a photo and explains what it suggests.
How to prepare
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Note where any stains or damp appear
